The Meteosat Third Generation Imager‑2 (MTG‑I2) satellite is now fully integrated inside the Ariane 6 launch vehicle and positioned on the launch pad at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. The mission is slated for lift‑off on the evening of Thursday, 27 August, marking the ninth flight of the Ariane 6 heavy‑lift rocket.
MTG‑I2 mission and capabilities
MTG‑I2 completes the first family of Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites, a series developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) to deliver unprecedented weather‑related data for Europe and northern Africa. The spacecraft will transmit high‑resolution atmospheric images every 2.5 minutes, a cadence that enables earlier warnings for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and other extreme weather events.
Such rapid imaging is expected to improve the preparedness of emergency services, authorities and the public. Moreover, the enhanced forecasting accuracy will benefit key European economies that depend on weather conditions, including agriculture, transport, insurance, tourism, as well as infrastructure and energy networks.
Ariane 6 launch details
For this mission, Ariane 6 will fly in a configuration that includes two P120C solid‑propellant boosters attached to the core stage. The combined thrust will place MTG‑I2 into a geostationary transfer orbit, the first time Ariane 6 will be tasked with delivering a payload to that destination. The rocket will travel farther than any previous Ariane 6 flight.
The encapsulation process was completed with the two halves of the payload fairing already bolted together; the upper segment was lowered over the satellite, then hoisted onto the vertically standing launch vehicle inside the Mobile Gantry. After final checks, the gantry will roll back, leaving the Ariane 6 and its valuable payload ready for countdown.
Arianespace is the launch service provider for flight VA270, while ESA oversees the Ariane 6 development programme to ensure autonomous access to space for European citizens.
European partnership and operational outlook
All three MTG satellites have been designed by ESA and built by a consortium of European industry leaders. The primary contractor is Thales Alenia Space, supported by OHB System in Germany and Leonardo in Italy. Once commissioned, the satellites will be operated by EUMETSAT, which will distribute the scientific data to forecasters and users across the region.
The launch of MTG‑I2 will finalize the first generation of MTG assets, expanding the continuity of high‑frequency, high‑resolution weather observations that began with earlier Meteosat missions. The successful deployment of the satellite is expected to strengthen Europe’s capability to monitor and predict weather patterns, reinforcing resilience against climate‑related hazards.
