Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, will see many businesses operating on a normal schedule, though some key financial services will be closed. The federal holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
Retail and Services
Most retail stores will remain open on Friday, June 19, 2026, to observe Juneteenth. Major retailers including Walmart, Costco, and Target have confirmed they will operate during their regular business hours. Spokespeople for Walmart and Target stated they would follow normal operating procedures, though Target’s hours can vary by location. Several grocery stores, such as Food Lion, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Whole Foods, are also expected to be open.
A wide range of other stores and fast-food chains will also be open. These include Apple, CVS, Dunkin’, HomeGoods, Homesense, IHOP, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s (with some locations offering extended hours), Marshalls, McDonald’s, Nordstrom, Petco, Sierra, Starbucks, Taco Bell, and TJ Maxx.
For shipping and delivery services, FedEx and UPS will continue to make deliveries and keep their retail locations open on June 19. However, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will suspend all mail deliveries and close its locations for the holiday. USPS services are scheduled to resume on Saturday, June 20.
Financial Markets and Banks
In observance of Juneteenth, the stock market will be closed on June 19. Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq websites indicate that trading will not occur on this federal holiday. Similarly, major banks, including Bank of America, Chase, and Wells Fargo, will close their doors and suspend operations for the day.
Background on Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the historical event in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas. They announced to enslaved people that the Civil War had concluded and they were free. The date is recognized as a federal holiday in the United States.
