Lacey Duvall, a 37-year-old mother of four from Arkansas, has undergone a significant dental reconstruction costing approximately $54,000, aiming to restore her smile and confidence after years of health challenges.
A History of Dental Compromise
Duvall’s dental issues began years ago as a lasting effect of childhood Hodgkin lymphoma treatment, which left her teeth brittle. The situation worsened in 2022 when a domestic violence incident caused further damage to her already compromised teeth.
Following the incident, Duvall found herself a single mother having lost her home and vehicle. She prioritized her children’s needs, delaying her own dental treatment for three years, during which she experienced ongoing pain. To fund the eventual procedure, Duvall worked three jobs and pursued online college studies while saving money and seeking financing options.
The Implant Procedure and Recovery
In May 2026, Duvall underwent implant surgery with Dr. Samuel F. Jirik, a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). The total cost of the treatment was around $54,000, with insurance covering only a portion, requiring Duvall to finance the remainder.
Dr. Jirik noted that Duvall’s medical history, including prior cancer treatment, presented a more complex case than typical implant procedures, necessitating extensive planning. “At our practice, we routinely treat patients with advanced dental needs and complex medical histories,” Dr. Jirik stated. “Many patients are told they are not candidates for dental implants because of previous cancer treatment, bone loss or other health concerns. Through advanced implant techniques and extensive treatment planning, we’re often able to provide options that help patients regain their function, confidence and quality of life.”
Duvall’s recovery period involved significant swelling and bruising, which she documented in a viral video that garnered nearly 5 million views. While some viewers perceived the recovery as a “medical nightmare,” Duvall and Dr. Jirik emphasized the transformative aspect of the process.
“What many people saw online was six days of bruising. What I saw was a cancer survivor six days into a life-changing transformation. Those are two very different stories,” Dr. Jirik told PEOPLE. Duvall added that her face was “too scary looking” to return to work for over a week, requiring more rest than initially anticipated.
Restored Confidence
Despite the challenging recovery, Duvall reports that the outcome has successfully restored her smile and confidence. The procedure was not just about replacing teeth but also about moving past years of hardship. “It is a very emotional experience because for so long I self-isolated to hide how bad my teeth were,” Duvall said. “Now I feel like the world is my oyster.”
Dr. Jirik described helping patients like Duvall as his life’s passion, enabling them to “smile, eat and live confidently again” after facing pain, embarrassment, or being told treatment was not possible.
