Apple’s anticipated foldable smartphone, dubbed the iPhone Ultra, is expected to incorporate MagSafe wireless charging, Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman told Tom’s Guide. Gurman said that every indication he has encountered points to MagSafe being built into the device, noting that Apple managed to integrate the technology into the iPhone Air and sees no reason it could not be applied to a foldable form factor.
MagSafe Likely Included
Earlier in the year, dummy models of the iPhone Ultra that emerged in April did not display the characteristic MagSafe ring, whereas prototypes of the iPhone 18 Pro did. Separate leaks of protective cases for the foldable, however, featured a MagSafe ring, creating uncertainty about the device’s charging capabilities. Gurman’s assessment leans toward inclusion, emphasizing that Apple’s engineering team has already demonstrated the ability to accommodate MagSafe in a thin, non‑folding handset.
Design and Feature Rumors
Rumors suggest the iPhone Ultra will be exceptionally thin—approximately 4.5 mm when opened—leaving insufficient space for a Face ID camera system. Instead, the device is expected to rely on Touch ID for biometric authentication. Other reported specifications include a price tag exceeding $2,000, a 5.5‑inch outer display when the phone is closed, and a 7.8‑inch inner display when unfolded. The design is described as short and wide with a passport‑style silhouette.
Technical expectations point to Apple’s latest modem, likely the C2, paired with the upcoming A20 Pro chip. Camera hardware is rumored to consist of wide and ultra‑wide lenses, while a telephoto lens is expected to be omitted. The hinge is said to be durable with a minimal, though not invisible, crease, and Apple is reportedly “going to great lengths” to ensure apps automatically resize for the varying screen dimensions.

Apple is slated to unveil the foldable iPhone Ultra at its “Surprise and Shine” event on Wednesday, September 9, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. While some speculation has floated the possibility of a delayed rollout for the foldable model, Gurman expressed confidence that the device will launch on the same day as the Pro models or within a few weeks thereafter. He dismissed theories of a late‑October or November release, describing such delays as unlikely given Apple’s supply‑chain planning.
If the MagSafe feature is confirmed, it would align the iPhone Ultra with Apple’s broader ecosystem of magnetic accessories, ranging from chargers to wallets, and would simplify the user experience for a device that already presents new challenges in form factor and durability.
