Apple is slated to introduce its next‑generation iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the company’s first foldable iPhone at its annual fall event on Wednesday, September 9. The gathering, promoted with the tagline “Surprise and shine,” will likely follow Apple’s pattern of announcing new iPhones in the first half of September and making them available for purchase the following Friday.
Design and Display Updates
According to the latest reports, the iPhone 18 Pro models will retain the overall silhouette of the iPhone 17 Pro while offering a smoother rear surface that reduces the visual contrast between the glass back and the aluminum frame. Apple is also expected to shrink the Dynamic Island, a change made possible by relocating some Face ID components beneath the display.
The display itself is said to move to a more power‑efficient LTPO+ panel supplied jointly by Samsung Display and LG Display. In addition, Apple has reportedly tested three new color finishes for the Pro lineup: Light Blue, Dark Cherry and Silver, with the traditional Black option no longer expected.
Performance and Connectivity
At the heart of the new devices will be Apple’s A20 Pro chip, manufactured by TSMC using an advanced 2 nanometer process. The chip will incorporate Wafer‑Level Multi‑Chip Module (WMCM) technology, which is projected to improve both performance and power efficiency over its predecessor.
Apple’s next‑generation in‑house cellular modem, dubbed the C2, may appear in the Pro models, delivering faster data rates and greater efficiency. However, the C2 is rumored to lack mmWave support, meaning U.S. units could still rely on a Qualcomm modem while other regions might receive the C2.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to house a larger battery in the 5,100–5,200 mAh range, resulting in a slightly thicker and heavier device compared with the standard Pro model.
Camera Enhancements and Software
Camera hardware is set for several upgrades. Samsung is believed to have supplied a new three‑layer stacked image sensor that boosts responsiveness, reduces noise and expands dynamic range. Both Pro models will retain a 48‑megapixel Fusion camera but will add a variable aperture, granting users finer control over light intake and depth of field.
Apple is also redesigning the Camera Control button to rely on pressure sensing rather than a separate capacitive layer, a move intended to simplify the mechanism and cut costs.
Software-wise, the iPhone 18 Pro series will ship with iOS 27, featuring an overhauled Siri AI experience that includes onscreen awareness, personal context, expanded web knowledge and broader Apple Intelligence capabilities.
Another notable rumor is that the new iPhones could support full 5G connectivity via satellite, extending Apple’s existing emergency‑only satellite service to broader data use.
Pre‑orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are anticipated to begin on Saturday, September 12 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, with sales likely commencing the following Friday. Apple has confirmed that a standard iPhone 18 will not be part of the September 2026 launch; instead, the base iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 are slated for a spring 2027 release.
