NASA’s Roman Space Telescope Begins Commissioning After Falcon Heavy Launch

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off from Launch Complex‑39A at Kennedy Space Center on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 7:26 a.m. EDT (1126 GMT) aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. The mission, designed to probe dark energy, hunt exoplanets and study distant stars, entered its first week in space and is now moving into the commissioning phase.

Launch, Deployment and Initial Maneuvers

The Falcon Heavy’s three‑core configuration performed nominally, with both side boosters executing boost‑back burns and landing at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The core first stage separated from the second stage as planned, and the payload fairing was jettisoned before the upper stage placed Roman into its initial orbit about 31 minutes after liftoff.

Roman separated from the launch vehicle at 7:57 a.m. EDT (1157 GMT), 31 minutes after liftoff. Following separation, the telescope deployed its solar panels, high‑gain antenna and the large sunshade aperture cover that blocks stray light from its optics. These steps marked the start of a series of checks that will verify the spacecraft’s health before it proceeds toward its final destination.

On Aug. 31 the spacecraft performed a 3.5‑minute engine burn, the first of two planned mid‑course corrections. The burn fine‑tuned Roman’s trajectory toward the Sun‑Earth Lagrange Point 2 (L2), a gravitationally stable location roughly 930,000 miles (1.5 million km) from Earth. NASA officials noted that a second burn, if required, would occur later in the same week, with orbital insertion at L2 expected about 100 days after launch. Once at L2, the telescope will need station‑keeping burns roughly every 28 days.

Commissioning Activities and Science Outlook

Commissioning entered a new phase on Sep. 1 when mission engineers powered on the Coronagraph Instrument. The instrument is now undergoing calibration tests that will last several weeks before it is cleared for scientific observations.

NASA’s post‑launch briefing featured Administrator Jared Isaacman, who praised both the Roman team and SpaceX’s launch crew for a smooth ascent. Isaacman highlighted the telescope’s potential to generate “more than 100,000 new exoplanets” and to advance understanding of dark matter and dark energy. Space.com astronomy editor Monisha Ravisetti asked about the telescope’s scientific capabilities during the press conference.

During the briefing Isaacman received a surprise call from President Donald Trump, who expressed excitement about the mission and complimented the televised launch visuals. The call was placed on speaker so the audience could hear Trump’s brief remarks.

Roman’s scientific payload includes a 300‑million‑pixel camera, and NASA has launched an “Adopt a Pixel” campaign that invites the public to symbolically adopt individual pixels. The agency expects the first science images to be released in January 2027, after several months of system checks and final calibrations.

Julie McEnery, the telescope’s senior project scientist, described the mission’s scope as “extraordinary,” noting that Roman will survey the Milky Way and catalog roughly 20 billion stars—potentially the largest astronomical catalog ever produced.

With its solar arrays, antenna, sunshade and coronagraph now operational, Roman is on track to complete commissioning over the coming weeks, after which it will begin its primary survey missions from the stable L2 environment.
