A child attending Eden Christian Academy, a private Christian school in the North Hills, has been confirmed as the second measles case in Allegheny County. The discovery comes as Pennsylvania confronts the nation’s largest measles outbreak, with more than 1,000 reported cases and five deaths across the state.
Statewide outbreak context
The first Allegheny County measles case was identified last week, with investigators noting possible exposure at a Target store on McKnight Road in McCandless. That initial case did not involve a school setting, according to the county health department. Since then, the department has confirmed a second case, though it declined to release identifying details about the student, citing privacy protections.
Public health officials emphasize that measles can be transmitted up to four days before symptoms appear and for four days after, making rapid identification and isolation critical. The county’s Medical Director, Jillian Irwin, has warned that “pockets” of unvaccinated children pose a heightened risk, especially in environments where vaccination rates fall below herd‑immunity thresholds.
School response and vaccination rates
Eden Christian Academy operates three campuses in the North Hills—elementary sites in Ross and Pine, and an upper‑grade campus in Ohio Township—serving a total of 658 students. The school’s vaccination rate stands at 81%, placing it in the bottom 10 percent of schools countywide and well below the 92‑95 percent coverage needed for herd immunity. County health officials target at least 95 percent vaccination among school populations.
The academy’s spokesperson confirmed that the institution is cooperating with the health department but could not disclose which campus was affected. In a statement to Public Source, the school said it was implementing the department’s protocols and had notified families and staff with guidance from public health authorities. The statement added, “The health, safety, and well‑being of our students, faculty, staff, and families is our highest priority.”
When asked about efforts to raise vaccination rates, the school did not provide a response. Earlier reporting by Public Source noted that private religious schools in the county generally have the lowest measles vaccination rates, with the youngest grades showing the greatest gaps.
Public health guidance and community concerns
Allegheny County Health Department spokesperson Ronnie Das explained that staff are providing “specific guidance to the school nurse and administration of an impacted school on how to organize lists of immune staff and students and ensuring school staff understands who needs to quarantine and for how long.” The department recommends quarantine for exposed individuals who are not immune or have not previously had measles, while confirmed cases must isolate.
Das added, “Anyone with measles needs to isolate from others during this time. Non‑immune household members must quarantine. Immune household members do not have to quarantine.”
Community members expressed anxiety about the outbreak. Lisa Bruce, who attended a special‑needs conference at a church physically connected to the Eden Christian Academy building, said she worries about unvaccinated individuals. While she is not concerned for her college‑age daughter, she is uneasy about her elderly parents, noting that the CDC presumes people born before 1957 are immune but that vaccine effectiveness can decline with age. “It worries me that people are not being vaccinated,” Bruce said. “Being vaccinated is a choice.”
The health department continues to review attendance records at the school to identify potential exposures and will issue quarantine orders as needed. With the county’s vaccination rate lagging behind state targets, officials stress that timely isolation and quarantine remain the most effective tools to curb further spread.
