United Airlines announced that beginning Jan. 1, 2027, its MileagePlus program will no longer allow members to earn elite status using flight‑segment counts. Instead, the airline will rely exclusively on Premier qualifying points (PQP) earned from eligible flight spending, award travel and United credit‑card activity. The shift also raises the requirement for the airline’s highest tier, Premier 1K, from 28,000 to 32,000 qualifying points.
Changes to Elite Qualification
Under the current structure, members could reach the entry‑level Premier Silver tier by combining 15 flight segments with 5,000 points, or by earning 6,000 points alone. With the new rules, the segment component is removed, and the 6,000‑point threshold becomes the sole path to Premier Silver.
The point thresholds for Premier Gold and Premier Platinum remain unchanged, preserving the existing points‑only options for those tiers. However, the top‑tier Premier 1K now requires 32,000 qualifying points, a 4,000‑point increase over the 2026 level.
United defines a Premier qualifying point as one point per dollar spent on United base fares and upgrades, as well as one point for every 100 miles redeemed for United travel. Holders of United Chase credit cards also accrue points through card spending.
Impact on Members and Additional Benefits
While the segment metric is being retired, United will still require members to take at least four flights on United or United Express aircraft within a calendar year to be eligible for any Premier status. This floor ensures that members maintain a baseline level of flight activity.
United also introduced a head‑start benefit for cardholders who already hold Premier status. At the start of each new year, those members will automatically receive 5 % of the points needed to retain the status level they earned the previous year.
Jarad Fisher, United’s President of MileagePlus, described the segment‑based metric as an “old relic” in an interview with The Points Guy. He said the airline believes a single, consistent metric simplifies the program and aligns flight activity, engagement and spending across the board.
Context and Recent Program Adjustments
The 2027 overhaul follows a series of changes United made earlier in the year. The carrier recently revised how travelers earn miles tied to its credit‑card portfolio and reduced mileage earnings for basic‑economy tickets, mirroring similar moves by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. United also increased the thresholds for Premier status in 2024, affecting qualifications for the 2025 award year.
Overall, United’s adjustments aim to streamline the elite‑status calculation and place greater emphasis on revenue‑related activity rather than sheer flight count. Members will need to focus on spending and qualifying travel to maintain or advance their status under the new framework.
