Airbnb bans hosts from asking guests to strip beds, wash dishes

Airbnb announced a revision to its house‑rule guidelines that bars hosts from asking guests to perform cleaning tasks traditionally handled by professional cleaners. Effective for all reservations booked on or after 20 November, the new policy specifically prohibits requests such as stripping beds, washing dishes, and taking trash offsite.

Key elements of the updated guidelines

The company now allows hosts to set up to seven standard house rules and to add other requests deemed “reasonable.” However, the updated rules clarify that guests, who already pay a cleaning fee, should not be tasked with duties that require “significant effort or time” or that would normally be performed by a cleaner. The Airbnb website lists stripping the bed, washing and putting away dishes, and removing trash as examples of prohibited requests.

Airbnb told the BBC that the change responds to community feedback indicating that existing house rules can be “confusing, onerous and hard to manage.” The firm said the redesign makes rules easier to discover and clearer to set, while also introducing a policy that keeps requests reasonable and eliminates surprises for travelers.

Exceptions, enforcement and guest notifications

While the policy is broad, Airbnb noted that limited exceptions may be granted. For instance, hosts may ask guests to limit shower time in areas subject to drought‑related water restrictions. Contracts that impose additional obligations will only be permitted when required by law or by homeowners‑association rules.

Hosts will no longer be able to impose fines for rule violations, though they retain control over the rules themselves. If a host’s request violates Airbnb’s policy, the issue can be flagged and the host may appeal the decision.

To improve transparency, the platform will display a property’s rules more prominently to guests and include them in reservation reminders, ensuring travelers see the expectations before they arrive.

Background, guest complaints and public reaction

Guest complaints about unreasonable departure tasks have been reported for years, particularly because cleaning fees are already included in the price of a stay. Some travelers have expressed frustration over being asked to strip beds or wash dishes despite paying for professional cleaning services.

Recent social‑media attention has highlighted the issue. TikTok videos from hosts identified as Cassie and Jon, who manage a rental in Georgia, went viral for showing meticulous post‑checkout inspections. In one clip, the couple accused guests of “disrespecting the house rules” for leaving a television remote out of place. Their strict approach has drawn criticism, with the hosts claiming their content was misinterpreted. The videos have also inspired other creators to parody stringent hosts, underscoring the broader conversation about reasonable expectations in short‑term rentals.

By formalising the limits on host requests, Airbnb aims to address these long‑standing concerns while preserving hosts’ ability to set clear expectations for their properties.
