Modi and Trump Exchange Messages Amid Strains Over Tariffs Talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump exchanged another round of positive remarks this week, signaling efforts to strengthen bilateral ties despite ongoing strains over trade and tariffs. This marks the second friendly interaction between the two leaders on social media within just four days.

Strains Over Tariffs and Russian Energy Purchases

The exchanges come against the backdrop of Trump’s recent decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, citing India’s continued purchases of Russian energy. The move has caused friction in the relationship, even as both countries explore ways to deepen cooperation.

Modi Reaffirms India-US Partnership

Responding to Trump’s remarks, Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday reaffirmed India and the US as “close friends and natural partners.” He expressed confidence that ongoing trade negotiations would “unlock the limitless potential of the India-US partnership.”

Trump Optimistic on Trade Talks

Earlier, Trump had posted on Truth Social that the US and India are “continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations.” He added through his official post, “I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!”

Trump Pushes EU on Tariffs Against India and China

Despite the positive tone, tensions remain afloat currently. The Financial Times reported that Trump, in a recent call with senior US and EU officials in Washington, has asked the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100% on Chinese and Indian goods.

According to unnamed sources, this was part of a joint effort to increase economic pressure on Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

A Follow-Up to Earlier Exchange

This latest interaction follows an earlier exchange on Saturday when Modi warmly reciprocated Trump’s positive assessment of bilateral ties. At that time, the US president told reporters he would “always be friends” with Modi and highlighted a “special relationship” between the two nations. That exchange was the first public display of warmth between the two leaders since their phone call on June 17.

Looking Ahead: The Future of India-US Relations

As discussions on a trade deal move forward, both leaders appear keen to balance public displays of camaraderie with tough negotiations behind the scenes. The outcome of these talks could play a decisive role in shaping the future of India-US economic and strategic partnership.

It must be mentioned that the tone of Trump’s two recent social media posts on India and Modi was markedly different from the criticism that his senior aides have heaped on the country and its leadership in recent days. Renowned White House trade advisor Pete Navarro has made several strong and radical statements in the past days and claimed India’s tariffs are costing American jobs and its purchases of Russian oil is “profiteering” that provides funding for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war machine.

Amidst such remarks being surfaced, the camaraderie being displayed between the two global leaders is rather welcoming and indicative of a prospective genuine friendship being formed through the upcoming negotiations.
