Sensex and Nifty Poised for Positive Open as Crude Prices Ease

On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, analysts anticipate that India’s major equity benchmarks will begin the trading session on a positive footing. The outlook follows a continuation of the rally that saw the BSE Sensex close at 74,858.99, up 564.03 points (0.76%), and the NSE Nifty finish at 23,429, gaining 82.60 points (0.35%). Both indices extended a four‑day winning streak that was underpinned by a steady decline in crude oil prices, fresh foreign fund inflows and broader gains in global equity markets.

Market outlook for Indian equities

Enrich Money’s chief executive, Ponmudi R, highlighted that the ongoing dip in crude oil – with West Texas Intermediate trading in the $92‑$93 a barrel range – offers “some relief on the broader macroeconomic front.” The comment reflects four consecutive sessions of falling crude, a factor that has previously buoyed Indian markets. In parallel, Bajaj Broking’s Deputy Vice President‑Research, Pabitro Mukherjee, noted that while benchmark indices opened flat, they gradually moved into positive territory, extending the rebound for a fourth straight session. However, he cautioned that market breadth remained weak and that the India VIX fell, indicating subdued volatility.

Gift Nifty, the futures contract used as a pre‑market indicator, traded around 23,521.50, up roughly 75.20 points from the previous close. This gap‑up movement suggested a bullish opening for the underlying indices. The Sensex opened at 74,535.18, touched an intraday high of 74,987.40, and closed near the 75,000 mark, while the Nifty opened almost flat at 23,330.20, recorded a low of 23,314.80 in the opening minute, and later reached an intraday high of 23,466.80 before settling at 23,429.

Technical analysis of Sensex and Nifty

Choice Equity Broking’s Vice‑President of Technical Research, Sachin Gupta, outlined a sideways bias for the Sensex. He identified 74,000‑74,450 as a key support zone and 75,000‑75,500 as the primary resistance band. Gupta warned that sustained buying above 75,000 could improve the short‑term price structure, whereas a break below 74,000 might trigger increased selling pressure. He advised traders to watch open‑interest (OI) levels for decisive breakouts or breakdowns before taking fresh directional positions.

On the Nifty, Choice Broking’s Technical Research Analyst, Hitesh Tailor, described the daily candle as bullish, with a small lower shadow and a moderate upper shadow, indicating continued buying interest despite some profit‑booking near the session high. Tailor pointed out that the index held above the immediate support zone of 23,250‑23,320, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) improved to 37.54, still below the neutral 50 mark but better than oversold levels. He emphasized that the 23,000 level remains a make‑or‑break point for the broader market structure. Immediate resistance, according to Tailor, lies between 23,480 and 23,550. Options data showed put OI concentration around 23,300‑23,400 and call OI concentration around 23,400‑23,500, with a put‑call ratio (PCR) of 0.94, suggesting a relatively balanced options environment. The India VIX declined to 11.22, reflecting lower volatility expectations.

Global influences and regional trends

International market movements reinforced the upbeat sentiment in India. Asian equities opened higher on Tuesday, and U.S. stock futures finished in green, largely erasing the losses recorded on Monday, 21 September. In the United States, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 370 points, the S&P 500 rose 1.5% – its strongest single‑day gain in over a month – and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 2.2% to a record closing high. The rally was attributed to a fall in bond yields, lower oil prices and strong buying in AI‑related chip stocks.

Oil markets showed mixed signals. Brent crude futures for November rose 22 cents to $100.57 a barrel, while WTI for October edged up 2 cents to $95.80 a barrel. The modest uptick came after a period of losses and amid monitoring of potential developments in U.S.–Iran talks at the United Nations General Assembly.

In Korea, the benchmark Kospi surged 153.89 points (2.2%) to 7,161.61 at the opening bell, driven by gains in major technology shares. The small‑cap Kosdaq also added 1.12%. Japan’s market remained closed for a three‑day holiday, which is expected to thin liquidity across regional markets for the week. Taiwan’s TAIEX index rose 1.60% to 48,472.38, continuing its upward trajectory.

Collectively, the combination of easing crude prices, supportive global equity momentum and positive technical indicators set the stage for a hopeful start to Indian trading on 22 September. Market participants are likely to watch the key support and resistance zones highlighted by technical analysts, as well as any further developments in oil pricing and global risk sentiment, to gauge the durability of the current rally.
