India’s Sree Charani Sets All-Time Record in Women’s T20I Bowling Rankings

India’s left‑arm spinner Sree Charani rewrote the record books on Tuesday when the International Cricket Council (ICC) updated its Women’s T20 International (T20I) bowling rankings. Charani’s rating rose to 817 points, surpassing the previous high of 806 points set by Australia’s Megan Schutt in November 2018. The new figure places Charani 11 points above the former benchmark and makes her the highest‑rated bowler ever in the list’s history.

Record‑Breaking Rating

The ICC’s rating system awards points based on a bowler’s performance in recent matches, weighted by the strength of the opposition and match context. Charani’s surge to 817 points reflects a series of impactful spells, most notably her contribution in the Asian Games final against Sri Lanka. The rating update not only crowns her as the top bowler but also underscores the growing competitiveness of India’s women’s cricket side on the global stage.

Charani’s achievement is particularly significant because the previous record had stood for nearly six years. Megan Schutt’s 806‑point rating was regarded as a high watermark for women’s fast‑bowling excellence. Charani, a left‑arm orthodox spinner, has now set a new standard for spin bowlers, demonstrating that consistency and effectiveness in the shortest format can translate into historic rating milestones.

Asian Games Final Performance

The Asian Games final on 2 October 2023 provided the platform for Charani’s rating jump. Facing Sri Lanka, India posted a massive total of 216 for three wickets, their highest ever in the tournament. Charani bowled a spell of 2 for 13 runs, helping restrict the Sri Lankan chase and contributing to a 147‑run victory that secured the gold medal for India.

Her figures were part of a broader team performance that saw opening batters Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma compile a 99‑run partnership. Mandhana, who scored 79 runs off 46 balls with five fours and seven sixes, also moved up the batting rankings, returning to the top five of the Women’s T20I batting list. Verma’s aggressive start set the tone for the innings, allowing India to build a formidable total that left the Sri Lankan side with little chance of recovery.

Beyond Charani’s own impact, the final highlighted the depth of India’s squad. The win marked India’s second gold medal in women’s cricket at the Asian Games, reinforcing the nation’s dominance in the regional competition. The performance also served as a catalyst for several Indian batters to improve their individual rankings.

Shifts Across Women’s T20I and ODI Rankings

In addition to Charani’s record, the ICC’s latest update recorded movement among a number of Indian and Asian players in both the T20I and One‑Day International (ODI) rankings.

Smriti Mandhana’s 79‑run knock lifted her one place, returning her to the top five of the Women’s T20I batting rankings. Richa Ghosh also made a notable climb, advancing three places to 25th after an unbeaten 49 runs off just 22 balls in the final. Pakistan’s captain Fatima Sana rose four places to 23rd following a 45‑run innings off 30 balls in the bronze‑medal match, where Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by 31 runs.

Bangladesh’s Sharmin Akhter gained ten places to reach 35th after scoring 46 runs off 45 balls. Among bowlers, Pakistan’s Nashra Sandhu returned to the top ten of the Women’s T20I bowling rankings, while Bangladesh’s Nahida Akhter moved up to 29th. Pakistan’s Umm‑e‑Hani made a dramatic jump of 58 places to 51st, reflecting a strong showing in recent matches. India’s Kranti Gaud also improved, climbing four spots to 53rd.

The update also brought changes to the Women’s ODI rankings. West Indies captain Hayley Matthews advanced three places to fourth among batters after posting a career‑best 182 runs against Zimbabwe in the ICC Women’s Championship series. The innings stands as the highest individual ODI score ever recorded by a West Indian woman.

Zimbabwe’s captain Modester Mupachikwa rose 16 places to a career‑best 40th after scoring 86 and 38 in the opening two matches of the series, which was level at 1‑1 at the time of the update. Her opening partner Kelis Ndhlovu moved from 61st to 56th. In the ODI bowling rankings, West Indies’ Aaliyah Alleyne climbed eight places to 58th, and Ashmini Munisar rose from 107th to 84th, reflecting the impact of their performances in the same series.

These movements illustrate the fluid nature of ICC rankings, where a single tournament or series can significantly alter a player’s standing. For India, the combination of Charani’s historic rating, Mandhana’s batting resurgence, and Ghosh’s rapid scoring underscores a broader trend of rising individual excellence within the team.

Looking ahead, India’s women’s side will aim to translate these ranking gains into sustained success on the world stage. With the next ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled for 2024, the team’s elevated positions in both batting and bowling categories suggest a strong platform from which to launch a title challenge.

Charani’s record‑breaking rating also serves as a benchmark for future spinners. Her ability to combine economy with wicket‑taking in high‑pressure matches sets a template for aspiring bowlers in the sub‑continent and beyond. As the ICC continues to refine its rating methodology, performances like Charani’s will remain pivotal in shaping the narrative of women’s cricket and its evolving competitive landscape.
