Pollard and Rowles headline Joburg Super Kings’ SA20 auction haul

The fifth edition of South Africa’s premier T20 competition, SA20, held its player auction on Wednesday, October 7. Joburg Super Kings emerged as the most active franchise, securing veteran all‑rounder Kieron Pollard and rising South Africa U19 talent Jason Rowles as headline signings.

Joburg Super Kings secure marquee signings

Thirty‑nine‑year‑old Kieron Pollard, a long‑time fixture of the Mumbai Indians family across several leagues, entered the Super Kings roster for the first time. The West Indian all‑rounder was snapped up without competition, agreeing to a contract worth R1.5 million. Pollard’s experience includes stints with Mumbai Indians, MI Cape Town, MI Emirates and MI New York, making him a high‑profile addition to the Johannesburg‑based side.

Joining Pollard, South Africa’s under‑19 product Jason Rowles signed a deal valued at R2.9 million, the highest bid of the night. Rowles, roughly twenty years younger than Pollard, is also an all‑rounder and was described as a promising talent from the national youth system. His acquisition underscores the Super Kings’ strategy of blending seasoned internationals with emerging local prospects.

Beyond the two marquee names, Joburg Super Kings completed their squad with four additional purchases. Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis returned to the yellow kit after a R2.7 million bid. The franchise also added Dayyaan Galiem for R375 000, Blessing Muzarabani for R500 000 and Andries Gous for R1 million. Retained players include a mix of South African and overseas talent such as Jarren Bacher, Matthew de Villiers, Akeal Hosein (West Indies) and England’s James Vince. The team also secured West Indies pacer Jason Holder as a pre‑signing ahead of the season.

Other franchises fill their rosters

MI Cape Town entered the auction with six spots to fill. Their first acquisition, Shimron Hetmyer, opened the bidding and secured a R1.5 million contract. The franchise then added South African all‑rounder Wiaan Mulder for R2.6 million after a late bid, despite stiff competition from Joburg Super Kings. New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult returned to the side on a R1.5 million deal. Additional picks – Daniel Smith, Lehan Botha and Oliver Whitehead – each signed for R200 000, rounding out Cape Town’s refreshed lineup.

Pretoria Capitals, operating with a tighter budget, filled five positions late in the auction. Their selections included Keemo Paul, Ackeem Auguste, Josh Breed and Temba Bavuma, each at R200 000. The Capitals also secured Rassie van der Dussen for R500 000 after he initially went unsold in the opening marquee round. Retained talent such as Dewald Brevis, Keshav Maharaj and Andre Russell remained on the books, while pre‑signings added England’s Phil Salt and Australia’s Matthew Short.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape closed their two remaining slots by signing South African fast bowler Nandre Burger for R500 000 and England‑born New Zealand pacer Craig Overton for R1.5 million. Their retained core features prominent names like Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje and Mitchell van Buuren, complemented by pre‑signings Mitchell Marsh (Australia) and Bangladesh’s Rishad Hossain.

Budget considerations and unsold players

Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals did not add any players through the auction, having already satisfied their squad requirements after the league increased the salary cap to R42 million. Both franchises retained extensive line‑ups featuring international stars such as Jos Buttler, Kane Williamson and Sunil Narine, and made pre‑signings like England’s Sam Curran (Super Giants) and Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai (Royals).

All monetary figures quoted are in South African Rand. The auction highlighted a blend of high‑profile overseas veterans and promising South African talent, setting the stage for a competitive SA20 season where franchises will balance experience, youth and budget constraints.
