Indian markets poised for muted start after strong rebound

On Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the Indian equity market is expected to begin the day on a cautious footing, even though the previous session saw a pronounced rally. The pre‑market GIFT Nifty index was quoted near 22,765, roughly 85 points below its prior close, signalling a tentative opening for both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50.

Indian market outlook

Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, warned that the opening could be subdued despite recent corporate earnings strength and a rebound in information‑technology stocks. He highlighted that the surge in West Texas Intermediate crude to around $95 a barrel, driven by heightened tensions in the Middle East, could keep inflationary pressures and external‑balance risks high. “Continued uncertainty surrounding regional energy supplies could limit the sustainability of the domestic market recovery,” he said.

Ajit Mishra, senior vice‑president of research at Religare Broking, noted that the market’s recovery on Tuesday was robust, with the benchmark indices gaining more than one and a half percent after a cautious start. He observed that the Sensex and Nifty closed near their intraday highs, reflecting steady buying throughout the session.

Technical analysis of Sensex and Nifty

The Sensex posted a gain of 1,109.10 points, or 1.54 %, finishing at 73,033.78 – its highest close in four months. During the session the index rose as much as 1,120.99 points, touching 73,045.67 before easing slightly. Sachin Gupta, vice‑president of technical research at Choice Equity Broking, said the index’s outlook has improved after the bounce. He explained that maintaining a position above the 72,400–72,650 range could pave the way for further advances toward the 73,300–73,700 zone, provided the market decisively clears the current resistance. Failure to hold above those levels, he cautioned, might trigger consolidation or renewed selling.

The Nifty 50 also rallied, adding 358.60 points (1.60 %) to settle at 22,721.95, its strongest single‑day percentage gain since 12 June 2026. After an early flat start and a dip to 22,288, the index reversed sharply, held its upward trajectory, and closed at its session high. Nandish Shah, deputy vice‑president at HDFC Securities, pointed out that the Nifty’s close above the 13‑day DEMA for the first time since 25 August 2026 signals an early improvement in short‑term momentum. He identified resistance in the 23,100–23,150 band and noted that support now sits at 22,580, with a secondary level at 22,300. As long as these thresholds hold, Shah said, the short‑term bias remains in favour of buying on dips.

In addition to price moves, the NSE cash‑market turnover rose 9 % compared with the prior session, underscoring heightened trading activity following the rebound.

Global market context

Across the Pacific, Asian equity markets displayed mixed but generally positive signs on Wednesday. South Korea’s Kospi index opened modestly higher, gaining 26.73 points to 6,062.08 after a 5.46 % plunge the day before, which had been driven by concerns over large capital expenditures for artificial‑intelligence projects. Japan’s Nikkei 225 opened up 0.24 % at 67,942.23 and later traded marginally higher at 67,921.92. Taiwan’s TAIEX also recovered, climbing 0.54 % to 48,601.17 after two consecutive session declines.

In the United States, major indices closed lower on Tuesday, reflecting pressure from semiconductor‑related sell‑offs and mixed earnings reports from large banks such as Citigroup. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 180.45 points, or 0.3 %, to finish at 51,670.10. The S&P 500 dipped 1.79 points, less than 0.1 %, ending at 7,805.45, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 41.52 points, or 0.2 %, to close at 27,204.38.

U.S. stock futures traded down on Tuesday, adding to the cautious tone that filtered into Asian pre‑market activity. Nonetheless, the rebound in Asian equities on Wednesday suggests that regional investors are seeking opportunities despite the backdrop of higher oil prices and ongoing geopolitical concerns.

Overall, while the Indian market may open on a softer note, the strong performance on Tuesday, reinforced by technical indicators and improved corporate earnings, provides a foundation for potential upside if key resistance levels are breached and external risks subside.
