Minecraft Snapshot 4 Introduces Jukebox Playlists and Brittle Ice

Mojang has rolled out the fourth snapshot for version 26.4 of Minecraft, delivering two headline features that reshape both the auditory and environmental aspects of the game. The update enables jukeboxes to draw music discs from a chest placed above them, creating automatic playlists, while a newly added Brittle Ice block introduces a hazardous element to the icy caves that players explore.

New Features: Jukebox Playlists and Brittle Ice

The jukebox playlist system works by positioning a regular chest, a trapped chest or any copper chest variant directly on top of a jukebox. When discs are stored in the chest, the jukebox will play them in the order of the chest slots, automatically skipping empty slots or items that are not music discs. Once a disc finishes, the block swaps the disc in the jukebox with the next eligible disc from the chest, allowing continuous playback without manual intervention. If the chest contains no discs, the jukebox simply repeats the currently loaded disc. Players can also eject the current disc, prompting the jukebox to jump to the next available record.

Brittle Ice makes its debut as a block exclusive to the newly defined Ice Caves biome, which is part of the broader crevasse world‑generation feature. The block behaves like regular ice until a player or mob steps on it; at that moment it begins to crack and eventually shatters, creating a temporary hazard. The Frostbite mob, however, can traverse the block without causing it to break. Brittle Ice can be harvested with a Silk Touch enchantment, preserving the block for placement elsewhere. Additionally, the block can be generated in the wild when flowing water contacts a Blue Ice block horizontally, turning the adjacent water block into Brittle Ice.

Gameplay Adjustments and Sound Updates

Beyond the headline additions, the snapshot refines several ice‑related mechanics. Frosted Ice now emits a vibration event whenever it changes state, a detail that may affect redstone contraptions that react to vibrations. When Ice, Frosted Ice, or Brittle Ice are placed adjacent to one another, their interior faces are no longer rendered, resulting in a cleaner visual transition between the different ice types.

Mob behavior around freezing has also been altered. Zombies, Drowned and Husks are now immune to the freezing effect and will not take damage from it. Drowned exhibit a new transformation chain: when they enter Powder Snow, they first become a Zombie before eventually converting into a Frostbite. This change replaces the previous direct conversion and aligns the behavior with other frost‑related entities. The update adds custom sound files for all four ice variants—Ice, Packed Ice, Blue Ice and Frosted Ice—enhancing the auditory feedback when players interact with these blocks. Additionally, the sound set previously labeled minecraft:amethyst has been renamed to minecraft:amethyst_block for consistency.

Technical tweaks accompany the gameplay changes. The Data Pack version has been bumped to 124.0 and the Resource Pack version to 100.1. Server stability has been improved; the server now more reliably disconnects clients whose packets cause errors, reducing the chance of corrupted sessions. A new world‑generation feature called “crevasse” carves winding, tapered gaps into terrain, providing natural locations for the Ice Caves and the Brittle Ice block. Several block tags have been introduced, including #jukebox_containers for blocks that can feed jukeboxes and #face_occluding_ice_blocks for ice blocks that hide interior faces. An entity tag #does_not_break_brittle_ice marks mobs that will not break Brittle Ice on contact.

Technical Changes and Bug Fixes

The snapshot also removes the separate flowing_water and flowing_lava fluid types, consolidating them under the existing water and lava definitions that now rely on level and source properties. Sound variant fields for several farm animals—chickens, cows, cats, pigs and wolves—have been made optional, simplifying resource pack creation. Visual updates include refreshed jukebox textures as well as new textures and sound effects for Brittle Ice.

A substantial list of bug fixes accompanies the release. Notable entries include fixing the classification of Ice Caves under the #is_cave biome tag (MC‑312378), correcting the behavior of Frostbites converting while in powder snow (MC‑312383), and ensuring Drowned convert properly instead of dying in powder snow (MC‑312385). Other fixes address closed caption inaccuracies for Frostbite actions (MC‑312362, MC‑312367), restore the correct sky color in End biomes (MC‑304895), replace the Java logo on the taskbar icon with the game’s logo (MC‑310088), and prevent armor stand destruction from triggering sculk shriekers (MC‑312256). The developers note that dozens more minor fixes cover sound, GUI behavior and debug overlay typos.

Players interested in testing these changes can download the snapshot through the Minecraft Launcher. After launching the client, users must enable snapshots in the “Installations” tab. Mojang warns that snapshot versions may corrupt existing worlds, recommending that users back up saves or run the snapshot in a separate directory.

Overall, Snapshot 4 for version 26.4 expands the creative toolkit for builders and musicians while adding a fresh environmental hazard that deepens the risk‑reward calculus of exploring icy biomes. The combination of new block behaviors, sound enhancements and extensive bug squashing signals Mojang’s continued commitment to refining the Java Edition experience ahead of the next full release.
