FASTag Annual Pass Rolled Out; Check out the Changes & Benefits

FASTag – India’s premium roadway travel instrument, designed for highway journeys has seen several upgrades since its inception as a pilot project in 2014 and subsequently being made mandatory from October 2019. Maintained and regulated by the NHAI (National Highway Authority of India), the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has once again introduced a modification and announced a FASTag annual pass now.

Starting August 15, 2025, private vehicle owners in India can opt for a FASTag-based annual toll pass allowing unlimited access across National Highway toll plazas, but subject to a maximum of 200 crossings or one year of validity, whichever gets completed earlier.

The policy was officially announced by Union Minister of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari on his X (formerly Twitter) account.  This modification aims to simplify toll payments, ease congestion and reduce friction at toll booths nationwide. Currently, FASTag is operational at over 750 toll plazas, including all National Highways and over 100 state highways in India.

How does FASTag Work?

This one-of-its-kind electronic toll collection system uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to automatically deduct toll charges from a prepaid account linked to the vehicle. As of December 2024, there are over 10.5 crores active FASTag users, according to the data released by NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India).

What is the FASTag Annual Toll Pass?

The annual toll pass (ATP) is a prepaid toll facility that shall be available at a fixed cost of INR 3,000. It has been designed to enable seamless movement through National Highway toll plazas without multiple deductions. Once the pass is activated, it will remain valid for an entire year or until the vehicle completes 200 toll crossings, regardless of the toll amount applicable at each plaza.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this initiative falls under the National Highways Fee (Amendment) Rules, 2025 and will apply only on the designated National Highways.

Who Can Use the Pass?

The facility is exclusively available for non-commercial private vehicles – cars, jeeps, and vans only. To be eligible, the vehicle must have a valid registration and a functional FASTag. Commercial vehicles, including trucks, buses, and taxis, are not covered under this pass currently and will continue to follow the existing system.

How Will the Crossings be Counted?

The notification introduces a clarification regarding how toll crossings shall be measured. In closed-loop toll collection systems, where both entry and exit are recorded, a complete round trip through a single toll plaza will be counted as one crossing. This rule is expected to prevent disputes over double charges and promote fair usage tracking.

Where to activate and renew the pass?

The pass activation and renewal will be possible via a dedicated link that the government will soon make available on the Rajmarg Yatra App and the official websites of MoRTH and NHAI. Users will need to provide their vehicle details and FASTag ID to complete the activation process.

Will the Fee Remain Same?

The INR 3000 fee is subject to annual revision starting from April 1 every year as per the latest amendment. The changes will be made in accordance with Rule 5 of the principal toll rules, depending on inflation or policy updates. The revised fee will be communicated by the NHAI officials or Road Transport Ministry’s guidelines.

Why is the Pass Important for Highway Users?

The introduction of this annual toll pass is expected to ease several pain points for private vehicle owners, including frequent toll deductions at short intervals, delays at toll booths, and confusion over applicable charges.

The pass simplifies the tolling process through a one-time payment model and helps reduce traffic buildup at collection points. For frequent highway users who are used to driving more than 2500 to 3000 kms annually, the FASTag annual pass will offer meaningful savings and make long-distance road travel more seamless. Once the amount gets burnt out, a recharge can be made online in a similar fashion.
