Future projects under consideration include four next-generation 10,000-tonne destroyers and the indigenous development of a second aircraft carrier after the 40,000-tonne INS Vikrant, which would eventually replace the aging Russian-origin INS Vikramaditya.<\/p>\n<p>India, apart from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council \u2014 the US, Russia, China, France, and the UK \u2014 is the <strong><em>only country with the proven ability to design, build, and operate both aircraft carriers and SSBNs (nuclear-powered submarines armed with ballistic missiles).\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>According to naval officials, shipbuilding investments provide significant economic benefits, with each rupee spent generating a 1.8x multiplier effect across the domestic economy and creating multiple ancillary jobs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1189 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/newsraise.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BOOKMYSH-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"India, Navy, Maritime, Warships, Submarines, INS Vikrant\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsraise.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BOOKMYSH-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newsraise.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BOOKMYSH-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsraise.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BOOKMYSH-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsraise.com\/in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BOOKMYSH.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Growing Challenge from China<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At present, the <em>Indian Navy fields 140 warships, including 17 diesel-electric submarines<\/em> \u2014 11 of which are aging \u2014 two SSBNs, and a fleet of over 250 aircraft and helicopters.
