The global health body has asked countries to stay alert and report if these syrups are found in their regions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"1180\">According to reports, the WHO identified <strong data-start=\"842\" data-end=\"878\">specific batches of 03 syrups<\/strong>\u2014<em><strong data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"890\">Coldrif<\/strong> <\/em>from <em data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"920\">Sresan Pharmaceuticals<\/em> (Tamil Nadu), <strong data-start=\"935\" data-end=\"952\"><em>Respifresh<\/em> <em>TR<\/em><\/strong> from <em data-start=\"958\" data-end=\"982\">Rednex Pharmaceuticals<\/em>, and <em><strong data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"998\">ReLife<\/strong> <\/em>from <em data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1018\">Shape Pharma<\/em>. These syrups have been found to contain dangerously high levels of <strong data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1114\">diethylene glycol (DEG)<\/strong>, a toxic chemical known to cause fatal poisoning when ingested.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1182\" data-end=\"1653\">Sresan Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Coldrif, recently had its manufacturing license permanently revoked by Tamil Nadu authorities. The decision came after laboratory tests revealed the presence of DEG in concentrations as high as 48%, which is nearly 500 times above the permissible limit of 0.1%. DEG contamination has been linked to several mass poisoning incidents worldwide and can cause acute kidney failure and death, particularly in children.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"2090\">The deaths, primarily among children under five from Parasia village in Chhindwara district, sparked national outrage and a wider investigation into the pharmaceutical supply chain. Following the uproar, the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, G. Ranganathan, was arrested. Tamil Nadu health officials also launched an inspection drive across multiple drug manufacturing facilities in the state to identify potential violations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2092\" data-end=\"2531\">Responding to WHO\u2019s inquiries, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsraise.com\/in\/2025\/10\/04\/dghs-advisory-why-parents-should-avoid-giving-cough-syrups-to-kids\/\">India\u2019s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO)<\/a> confirmed that the syrups were highly toxic due to excessive DEG content. However, the CDSCO also clarified that none of the contaminated cough syrups had been exported, ensuring that the issue was contained within India. The United States authorities have also confirmed that they did not receive any shipments of the affected medicines.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2533\" data-end=\"2809\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsraise.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/09\/spread-of-coronavirus-by-people-with-no-symptoms-is-rare-who\/\">WHO<\/a> described these syrups as posing a serious and life-threatening health risk, urging countries to report their presence if detected. The global agency is expected to issue a Global Medical Products Alert once it receives complete data from Indian authorities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2811\" data-end=\"3179\">In response to the tragedy, India\u2019s Health Ministry has issued an advisory to all states and union territories, urging doctors to exercise extreme caution when prescribing cough syrups to children.
