At 25, the right\u2011hander has spent more than two years in the national squad, yet his international statistics have not matched the promise shown in domestic and A\u2011team outings.<\/p>\n<h2>Early promise and recent setbacks<\/h2>\n<p>Jurel made his Test debut alongside Sarfaraz Khan against England in Rajkot two years ago. While Khan has struggled for regular selection, Jurel managed to stay in the Test squad and was named a backup wicket\u2011keeper\u2011batter for India\u2019s limited\u2011overs sides. Despite this backing, he has not yet secured a permanent spot in the playing XI, even when the team has fielded a specialist batter alongside first\u2011choice keeper Rishabh Pant.<\/p>\n<p>His career pattern has been described as \u201cfrustrating\u201d: solid performances in shadow and preparatory matches have not translated into consistent runs at the highest level. Before the 2024 Border\u2011Gavaskar Trophy, Jurel was sent early to India A, where he posted scores of 80 and 68 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. However, he featured in only one match of that series, at Perth, scoring 11 and 1.<\/p>\n<p>Later, against the England Lions before the Anderson\u2011Tendulkar Test series, Jurel recorded 94 and an unbeaten 53 at Canterbury. He was on the bench for four Tests in England before being called up to replace the injured Pant for the Oval fixture, where he managed 19 and 34.<\/p>\n<h2>Domestic form versus Test output<\/h2>\n<p>In the home season that followed, India identified a need for a right\u2011hander and, with the management reluctant to recall Karun Nair, Jurel emerged as the favourite to earn more time as a specialist batter. India A hosted Australia A in two games, and Jurel\u2019s scores of 1, 56 and a commanding 140 were enough to earn the confidence of the decision\u2011makers ahead of the West Indies and South Africa Tests.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to play all four matches of the West Indies series, notching his maiden Test century in Ahmedabad. The subsequent four\u2011innings against South Africa yielded only 29 runs, a return that reportedly displeased the team\u2019s \u201cthink tank\u201d. The management is said to have reminded him that higher output is essential to remain relevant as a pure batter.<\/p>\n<p>Following the Test series, Jurel\u2019s form in the white\u2011ball arena, the IPL and a one\u2011off Test against Afghanistan was similarly underwhelming, with a solitary 19 runs to his name. His low scores and the way he has \u201cthrown his wickets away\u201d, as described by insiders, have surprised the coaching staff.<\/p>\n<h2>Technical lapses and criticism<\/h2>\n<p>Specific dismissals have highlighted technical concerns. In the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, off\u2011spinner Simon Harmer dismissed Jurel in both innings \u2013 first by a return catch, then by a mistimed pull that flew to deep mid\u2011wicket. In the second Test in Guwahati, a pull shot against left\u2011arm pacer Marco Jansen resulted in an easy catch at mid\u2011on. The one\u2011off Test against Afghanistan saw Jurel mis\u2011judge a delivery that bounced low and clipped the top of his off stump.<\/p>\n<p>During the recent India A tour of Sri Lanka, Jurel posted scores of 14, an unbeaten 141 and 53 in Galle, but his warm\u2011up outings in Colombo were modest, and his two matches at the Nondescripts Cricket Club ground produced just 1 and 17 runs. The second\u2011innings dismissal in the latter match is expected to raise further questions about his judgment under pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour has spoken highly of Jurel\u2019s character, describing him as a \u201cgreat work ethic, very sincere, nice kid, very intelligent as far as his game is concerned\u201d. Rathour recalled Jurel\u2019s debut in Rajkot and a \u201cfantastic knock\u201d in Ranchi, where a partnership with Kuldeep Yadav helped India chase a challenging total.<\/p>\n<h2>Galle as a potential turning point<\/h2>\n<p>With the Galle Test looming, Jurel has two net sessions to rebuild confidence and convince the management that he deserves the No.\u202f6 spot. Sarfaraz Khan, who joined the senior squad only hours before a recent encounter at the NCC Ground in Colombo, is also in contention, adding competition for the same role.<\/p>\n<p>Jurel\u2019s first\u2011class record includes 15 matches and a highest score of 249 against Nagaland, a performance that initially caught the eye of the selection panel headed by Ajit Agarkar. Rishabh Pant\u2019s recovery from a severe car accident and KS Bharat\u2019s brief stint in the first two Tests against England created an opening that Jurel seized in Rajkot.<\/p>\n<p>As the team prepares for the August\u202f15 start of the Galle Test, the match is being described as a \u201cbaptism of fire\u201d for Jurel.
