After Kharge delivered his speech, members of a right\u2011wing group associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) carried out a \u201cpurification\u201d ceremony on the stage. Gandhi said the ceremony was intended to signal that Dalits, a historically marginalized community, were \u201cunclean\u201d and should not be touched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly BJP and RSS members do this, and it is a crime. Under India&#8217;s Constitution, this is a crime, a criminal activity. \u2018Purification\u2019 is actually just another name for untouchability,\u201d Gandhi told reporters at Congress headquarters in Delhi. While the Constitution made this illegal, even today, Dalit children in schools are made to clean toilets and sweep and mop floors,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n<p>He also cited examples of unequal access to basic resources. According to Gandhi, Dalits are often barred from drinking water from village wells and are forced to dig private wells. At tea stalls, he claimed, two types of cups are used: reusable glass cups for non\u2011Dalits and disposable paper or plastic cups for Dalits, a practice he said is observable in both villages and cities across North India.<\/p>\n<p>Gandhi framed the controversy as part of a larger ideological battle. \u201cA fight is under way in the country between two ideologies. On one side is the Constitution of India, the Constitution of Ambedkar, Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Patel.
