The victims were traveling in a Tamil Nadu‑registered car that slammed into the rear of a goods lorry that was temporarily parked on a diversion stretch of the highway where construction work was in progress.

Details of the collision

According to the police report, the accident occurred at approximately 11:42 p.m. The car was moving from Guruvayur toward Kodungallur when it struck the stationary vehicle. Preliminary investigations point to driver fatigue as a possible factor, with early inquiries suggesting the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The force of the impact caused the car to be crushed and trapped beneath the rear of the lorry, making it difficult for rescuers to locate the wreckage initially. Local residents involved in the rescue described how the lorry had to be pushed forward and the car pulled with a rope before the extent of the damage could be properly assessed.

Victims identified

The eight passengers were identified as students of PSNA College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul. Their names and hometowns are as follows: Prasanna R. (Viraganoor, Madurai), Joshua Hilson J. (Old Vilangudi, Madurai), Murali Krishnan M. (Vadipatti, Madurai), Yuva Sajith K. (Ottanchatram, Dindigul), Jeeva N. (V.T. Patti, Dindigul), G. Santhosh (Melur, Madurai), Surya I. (Adiyanuthu, Dindigul) and V. Viswa (Pudunallakondanpatti, Salem). All were 20 years old.

Seven of the students were pronounced dead at the scene, while the eighth, initially injured, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital.

Rescue operations and aftermath

The rescue effort involved local residents, fire‑and‑rescue personnel, and police officers. Firefighters had to cut open the mangled vehicle to extract two of the victims, and the operation was described as one of the most challenging they had encountered. Ambulance crews, who regularly respond to road incidents, labeled the Kaipamangalam crash as among the most difficult scenes of their careers.

Following the extraction, the bodies were transferred to the mortuary complex at the medical college, where post‑mortem examinations began at about 9 a.m. on September 5. The mortuary was reported to be a scene of deep sorrow as relatives arrived, many of them unaware that the students had embarked on the trip. Families were met with a harrowing reality as they awaited the completion of autopsies and the release of the remains for final rites.

One family member, Raj Kumar, who is the brother of student Jeeva N., recounted that the group had intended a short one‑day outing to celebrate a recent car purchase by their friend Santhosh. The plan involved hiring a rental vehicle, though most families claimed they were not informed of the journey.

Police have traced the ownership of the rental car. The owner testified that he had handed the vehicle over to a student who approached him, but he was not told about the intended destination or the composition of the passengers.

The tragedy has prompted calls for heightened road safety measures, especially on construction‑affected stretches of highways where temporary diversions can create hazardous conditions. Authorities in Kerala have not yet released an official statement on potential policy changes, but the incident underscores the risks associated with driver fatigue and the need for stricter monitoring of nighttime travel on busy routes.

As the families of the deceased prepare to lay their sons to rest, the community in Thrissur grapples with the emotional toll of the accident. The loss of an entire cohort of engineering students in a single night is an unprecedented event for the district, and local leaders have pledged to provide counseling and support to the affected families.

Eight 20‑year‑old engineering students from Dindigul died when their rental car struck a parked lorry on NH 66 near Kaipamangalam, Kerala, on September 4, 2026.

[299
1944,1354,1945,1946,1947
post-1916","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-kerala-accident","tag-road-safety","tag-tamil-nadu-students","tag-thrissur","tag-vehicle-collision","entry
["GET
