Parts of Delhi are under a red alert until 1:30\u202fp.m., while a yellow alert covers the capital and nearby cities in the National Capital Region (NCR). The monsoon remains active, prompting isolated heavy\u2011rain forecasts for dozens of states from the north\u2011west to the far\u2011east.<\/p>\n<h2>Red and yellow alerts in Delhi and the NCR<\/h2>\n<p>Central, North, Northwest, Northeast Delhi and the Shahdara area have been placed under a red alert, signalling the risk of heavy rain, intense thunderstorms and lightning until early afternoon. The IMD\u2019s nowcast specifically mentions the possibility of strong downpours in these zones.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, a yellow alert has been issued for the broader Delhi region as well as the adjoining cities of Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Noida. The forecast calls for a generally cloudy sky over the capital with moderate rain persisting throughout the day. Residents are advised to stay alert for sudden showers and reduced visibility.<\/p>\n<p>The heightened alerts follow two consecutive days of heavy rain that caused water\u2011logging in several parts of Delhi\u2011NCR. Gurugram, in particular, experienced traffic snarls and long vehicle queues on both Friday and Saturday, underscoring the disruptive potential of the ongoing monsoon spell.<\/p>\n<h2>Widespread rainfall expected across northern and eastern states<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond the capital, the IMD predicts fairly widespread rain over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on Sunday. West Uttar Pradesh is likely to see similar conditions, while East Uttar Pradesh may continue to receive isolated heavy showers from September\u202f6 through September\u202f8.<\/p>\n<p>East Rajasthan is also slated for isolated heavy rainfall on Sunday. In the Himalayan foothills, Uttarakhand, Punjab and parts of Madhya Pradesh are among the states where the department expects isolated heavy rain events.<\/p>\n<p>The eastern and northeastern belt remains on high alert. Heavy showers are forecast for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, as well as the Sub\u2011Himalayan region of West Bengal and the state of Sikkim. These areas could experience intermittent downpours throughout the day.<\/p>\n<h2>Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across the country<\/h2>\n<p>Rain is not the only hazard highlighted by the IMD. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely across several states, with gusty surface winds adding to the severity. Isolated gusts of 30\u201140\u202fkm\/h are expected in Bihar, eastern Madhya Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Gangetic West Bengal, Jammu &#038; Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining areas, Karnataka, Sub\u2011Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, as well as western Rajasthan.<\/p>\n<p>Southern coastal regions may face stronger thunderstorms. Tamil\u202fNadu, Puducherry and Karaikal could see lightning and gusts reaching 40\u201150\u202fkm\/h at isolated locations. Strong surface winds are also anticipated in parts of Karnataka and Tamil\u202fNadu.<\/p>\n<p>Additional thunderstorms with lightning are forecast for the northeastern states, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, further expanding the geographic spread of severe weather on Sunday.<\/p>\n<h2>Rain and storms expected to persist into Monday<\/h2>\n<p>The wet spell is projected to continue on Monday, September\u202f7, although the list of regions facing heavy rain narrows slightly. Isolated heavy rainfall is still likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, eastern Madhya Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub\u2011Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and western Madhya Pradesh.<\/p>\n<p>Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30\u201140\u202fkm\/h are expected in parts of Bihar, eastern Madhya Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Sub\u2011Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jammu &#038; Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining areas, as well as western Madhya Pradesh. The same set of northeastern and central states\u2014Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Uttarakhand\u2014could also experience thunderstorms on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities in the affected regions are urged to monitor updates from the IMD and take precautionary measures, especially in urban centers where recent water\u2011logging has already strained infrastructure. Residents are advised to avoid non\u2011essential travel during periods of heavy rain and to stay clear of open areas during thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the forecast underscores a volatile monsoon phase, with heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds expected to affect a large portion of the country over the next two days.
