The upgraded body retains the 24.2‑megapixel sensor and DIGIC X processor but adds five‑axis in‑body image stabilization (IBIS), a multi‑controller joystick, and a flagship‑level autofocus system. Canon has not yet released UK pricing or an on‑sale date.

In‑body stabilization and handling upgrades

The most visible change is the introduction of IBIS, rated for up to 7.5 stops of compensation at the centre of the frame and 7.0 stops toward the edges. This five‑axis system replaces the original R8’s reliance on lens‑based stabilization and digital video IS, allowing photographers to capture sharp handheld images in low light without raising ISO, and to record steadier video without a tripod. Despite the added mechanism, the camera’s mass increases only modestly, weighing 499 g (body‑only) and 546 g with a battery and memory card, compared with 461 g for the first‑generation R8. The dimensions remain compact at roughly 131.4 × 90.0 × 79.7 mm, keeping the R8 Mark II smaller than Canon’s R6 Mark II.

Handling receives a dedicated focus with the addition of a multi‑controller joystick, a feature absent from the predecessor. The joystick enables rapid manual selection of focus points, complementing the existing 2.36‑million‑dot electronic viewfinder and 1.62‑million‑dot vari‑angle LCD screen. An optional EG‑E2 extension grip provides a separate tripod socket and direct battery access for extended shooting sessions.

Autofocus performance and burst shooting

Canon equips the R8 Mark II with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II enhanced by deep‑learning subject detection. The system recognises people, animals (including horses) and vehicles (including aircraft and trains), and offers eye, face, head and body tracking. It operates down to EV ‑7.5, matching the sensitivity quoted for Canon’s flagship EOS R1. A new Register People Priority function stores up to ten faces in‑camera (or one hundred on a memory card) to prioritise familiar subjects in crowded scenes.

Continuous shooting reaches 40 frames per second with the electronic shutter, and the buffer can hold up to 73 RAW files in a single burst—significantly larger than the original R8. In addition, the camera features a pre‑continuous shooting mode (H+), which captures roughly half a second before the shutter button is fully depressed, delivering up to 20 frames that anticipate fast‑moving subjects. This combination of high‑speed capture and predictive buffering is aimed at wildlife, children and unpredictable travel moments.

Video capabilities and the surprise 3D feature

On the video side, the EOS R8 Mark II records 4K UHD at up to 60 p, oversampled from a 6K sensor readout, and Full HD at up to 180 p for slow‑motion playback. It supports Canon Log 3, HLG, and a new Cinema View mode with a 2.35 : 1 aspect ratio, alongside LUT support for colour grading. Despite these advances, the camera retains the single UHS‑II SD card slot and uses the LP‑E17 battery, which delivers approximately 340 shots when using the LCD and 220 shots through the viewfinder.

A distinctive addition is Canon’s Dual Pixel 3D technology, the first of its kind in an entry‑level full‑frame body. The camera can embed depth information in JPEG files, which users can later convert into 3D images or models using a free Windows application. This feature signals Canon’s intent to explore beyond traditional still photography within a compact system.

Specifications and availability

The EOS R8 Mark II continues to use the 24.2 MP full‑frame CMOS sensor (36 × 24 mm) paired with the DIGIC X image processor. ISO ranges from 100 to 102,400, expandable to 50‑204,800. Shutter speeds span 30 s to 1/4,000 s electronically, with electronic shutter capabilities up to 1/16,000 s. Video recording includes 4K 60p oversampled from 6K, Full HD 180p, Canon Log 3, HLG, PQ, Cinema View 2.35 : 1, and frame‑grab functionality, all saved as MP4.

Autofocus specifications list Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with deep‑learning detection of humans, animals (including horses), and vehicles (including aircraft and trains), plus eye/face/head/body tracking and Register People Priority (10 in‑camera, 100 on card). The continuous‑shooting engine delivers 40 fps electronic shutter bursts, a 20 fps pre‑continuous mode in H+, and a buffer of up to 73 RAW files. The electronic first‑curtain shutter operates from 30 s to 1/4,000 s, while the electronic shutter extends to 1/16,000 s.

Connectivity options comprise dual‑band Wi‑Fi (2.4 GHz/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.3, USB‑C 10 Gbps with charging and livestreaming, Micro HDMI, a 3.5 mm microphone/headphone jack, and a multi‑function shoe. The body is constructed from magnesium alloy with dust‑ and moisture‑resistance, and the new multi‑controller adds ergonomic control. The camera accepts RF lenses, including RF‑S and EF/EF‑S via adapter.

Canon has not disclosed the UK price or exact launch date beyond the 16 September announcement, and the outlet will update the story once those details become available.

Canon announced the EOS R8 Mark II, adding five‑axis in‑body stabilization, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with deep‑learning detection and up to 40 fps continuous shooting.

[299
2079,2075,2076,2077,2078,2080
post-1996","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-autofocus","tag-canon","tag-eos-r8-mark-ii","tag-full-frame-camera","tag-in-body-stabilization","tag-video","entry
["GET
