The match comes under a cloud of speculation after the team, like the men’s side a year earlier, declined to receive the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi in Dubai last Sunday.

That refusal has raised the question of whether Naqvi will be invited to present medals in Nagoya, the host city for the Games. While the ACC president could be listed as a guest of honour by virtue of his role, there are strong indications that the organisers may choose otherwise.

Diplomatic backdrop and a historic bilateral fixture

India and Japan have recently marked 75 years of diplomatic friendship with a series of special measures, one of which includes a high‑profile cricket match. The World No. 1 women’s side will face Japan, an associate nation ranked 41st, on September 22. The fixture is not a routine bilateral series; it required coordination between the governments of India and Japan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the Japan Cricket Association (JCA).

Officials stress that the match is a gesture of goodwill rather than a competitive encounter. A member of the ACC, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Japan will not allow any embarrassment for the Indian side. India’s gesture of playing Japan will not go unacknowledged.” The comment reflects the expectation that the Japanese authorities will manage the ceremony in a way that avoids a repeat of the Dubai incident.

Nepal, another rising cricket nation, has yet to play a bilateral series against India, underscoring the significance of the Japan fixture. The ACC, led by Naqvi, is expected to have limited influence over the medal‑presentation decision, which rests with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the local organising bodies.

Who decides the chief guest?

The appointment of the chief guest for the medal ceremony is formally the prerogative of the OCA. However, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and the Aichi‑Nagoya Asian Games and Asian Para Games Organising Committee (AINAGOC) will also have a major say. Both are likely to be mindful of India’s concerns, given the recent diplomatic overtures between the two countries.

The BCCI has so far stayed out of the debate. After the Board’s annual general meeting on Friday, secretary Devajit Saikia told the Times of India that the federation would comment only after the teams have actually reached the podium. “The teams have to first reach the podium. We will take a call then, taking into account all prevailing factors at that moment. We will cross the bridge only when we reach it,” Saikia said.

A delegation from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is already in Nagoya, but sources within the IOA declined to discuss any formal representation to the OCA, JOC or AINAGOC. The lack of a public statement suggests that the IOA may be waiting for a clearer picture before lodging any objection.

Uncertainty over Mohsin Naqvi’s presence

There is no confirmed information on whether Naqvi will travel to Japan at all. A spokesperson for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told Cricbuzz that Naqvi’s visit to Japan is doubtful, adding, “I don’t think so.” The PCB official noted that the spokesperson may not be privy to the interior minister’s travel plans, leaving the matter open‑ended.

Naqvi’s reputation for making last‑minute decisions adds to the uncertainty. He arrived in Dubai only about 30 minutes before the women’s Asia Cup final was scheduled to end, a move that drew criticism from the Indian side.

In contrast, BCCI officials are confirmed to be travelling. Saikia himself will be in Nagoya on October 1 and will stay for the men’s final on October 3. The Indian men’s team is expected to arrive late on Saturday night, with their final also scheduled for October 3. The women’s final is set for September 22, the same day as the India‑Japan bilateral match.

India‑Pakistan match‑ups limited to medal contests

Earlier reporting by Cricbuzz on August 12 indicated that both the Indian and Pakistani men’s and women’s teams are drawn to meet only in a medal contest – either for gold or bronze. This arrangement means that a direct India‑Pakistan encounter could be limited to the podium stage, if it occurs at all. There is also a realistic possibility that the two nations will not face each other in Japan during the Games.

Overall, the situation underscores how a sporting dispute can intersect with diplomatic sensitivities and multi‑layered governance structures. While the Asian Games organisers are expected to avoid a repeat of the Dubai trophy row, the final decision on who presents the medals will hinge on negotiations among the OCA, JOC, AINAGOC, and the Indian sporting authorities.

For now, the focus for the Indian women’s team remains on securing a place in the final against Bangladesh. Whether the medal ceremony will be free of controversy will become clear only after the semifinals are concluded and the Indian side steps onto the podium, if it does.

India’s women’s cricket team faces a possible medal‑ceremony controversy at the Asian Games after refusing to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi.

[7
2010,1661,1778,216,432,1929
post-2101","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports","tag-asia-cup","tag-asian-games","tag-cricket","tag-india","tag-japan","tag-mohsin-naqvi","entry
["GET
