Tyagi asserted that Jammu and Kashmir is an “integral and inalienable part of India” and that the only portion of the region under foreign occupation is the area held by Pakistan. He called on the Pakistani delegation to vacate that territory without delay.

India’s core arguments

Tyagi framed his remarks as a reminder that every agenda item at the Council should acknowledge India’s sovereignty over the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir. He said, “Since Pakistan appears to need the reminder under every agenda item: Jammu and Kashmir was, is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India. The only part of Jammu and Kashmir under foreign occupation is the part Pakistan holds, which we again call upon it to vacate.”

The diplomat also challenged Pakistan’s use of a place of worship as “evidence of crime,” describing it as indicative of how Pakistan views the faith of others. He emphasized that India hosts one of the world’s largest Muslim populations and that Indian minorities actively participate in the country’s democratic processes, sit on the nation’s highest court and lead institutions.

Turning to Pakistan’s own demographic trends, Tyagi claimed that the country’s Hindu, Sikh and Christian populations have “shrank drastically since independence.” He alleged that the daughters of these minorities are subject to abduction, forced conversion and forced marriage, while blasphemy laws cast a shadow over every minority household. He extended the criticism to Pakistan’s Muslim minorities—Shias, Ahmadiyyas, Ismailis and Hazaras—stating they face systemic persecution and that their places of worship are regularly attacked and desecrated.

Linking Kashmir violence to Pakistan‑backed terrorism

Tyagi further accused Pakistan of supporting terrorism that has driven Kashmiri Pandits from their homes in 1990. He said Pakistan‑backed terrorists have since killed Kashmiris of every faith, including many Muslims. “The State that sponsored them is now asking this Council for an inquiry. The irony will not be lost on this Council,” he warned.

He reminded the assembly that, according to reports presented the previous Friday, “scores of civilians have been killed since June in the territory Pakistan occupies, students have been arrested in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and food and medicine have been held back.” When these accounts were delivered, Pakistan’s response was limited to a procedural “point of order.” Tyagi concluded that if any delegation meets the Council’s objective criteria for scrutiny, it is Pakistan.

Economic critique and call for development

Beyond human‑rights accusations, Tyagi highlighted Pakistan’s economic challenges. He suggested that Pakistan would better serve its population by focusing on development rather than “coveting territory of others or exporting terror.” He added that theatrics in the Council would not help Pakistan repay the loans that sustain its economy.

Parallel concerns raised about Pakistan’s own human‑rights record

While India’s representative focused on Kashmir, other delegates raised separate concerns about Pakistan’s internal human‑rights situation. During the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, Diana Stephanie Dehimat made an urgent appeal on behalf of Dr Sabiha Baloch, a member of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC). Dehimat warned that Dr Baloch could face arrest, enforced disappearance or even death for speaking out about the plight of the Baloch people. She noted that five of Dr Baloch’s colleagues were already imprisoned for peacefully raising human‑rights concerns.

Dehimat also referenced the cases of BYC leaders Dr Mahrang Baloch and Sibghatullah Shah, who are serving life sentences. She highlighted that the proceedings against them have raised serious doubts about due‑process standards in Pakistan.

The broader discussion at the Council underscored a pattern of alleged enforced disappearances in Balochistan and attacks on religious minorities within Pakistan, adding layers to the diplomatic exchange between New Delhi and Islamabad.

Context and implications

The exchange reflects long‑standing tensions over the status of Jammu and Kashmir, a region disputed since the partition of British India in 1947. India’s position, reiterated by Tyagi, is that the entire state is an inseparable part of the nation, while Pakistan continues to administer the northern and western portions, referring to them as “Azad Jammu and Kashmir.” The diplomatic spat at the UN Human Rights Council illustrates how both countries use international forums to advance their narratives on sovereignty, minority rights and security.

Tyagi’s remarks also aimed to draw attention to what India perceives as Pakistan’s double standard: criticizing India’s handling of minorities while allegedly suppressing dissent and minority rights within its own borders. By linking the Kashmir issue to broader accusations of terror sponsorship and economic mismanagement, the Indian diplomat sought to portray Pakistan as both a regional aggressor and a domestic rights violator.

For the United Nations body, the challenge remains to balance these competing narratives while investigating alleged violations on the ground. The Council’s next steps may include further inquiries, fact‑finding missions or calls for both parties to engage in dialogue, though no concrete resolution was announced during the session.

As the debate continues, the statements from New Delhi and Islamabad will likely shape diplomatic engagements, media coverage and policy discussions in the weeks ahead, underscoring the enduring complexity of the Kashmir dispute and the broader human‑rights concerns in South Asia.

Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi told the UN Human Rights Council that Jammu and Kashmir remains integral to India and urged Pakistan to vacate the territory it holds.

[299
216,2367,2368,257,2366
post-2199","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-india","tag-kashmir","tag-minorities","tag-pakistan","tag-un-human-rights-council","entry
["GET
