The debut price of ₹1,800 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) surged to ₹1,878 within minutes, ending the day at ₹1,818 – a 1.85 % gain over the ₹1,785 IPO price.

IPO size and subscription strength

The NSE’s offering of ₹22,569 crore (approximately $2.7 billion) ranks as India’s second‑largest public issue, trailing only Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870 crore IPO in 2024. The issue also eclipsed the ₹21,000 crore LIC offering of 2022. Investor demand was robust, with the overall subscription level recorded at nearly six times the issue size and institutional demand reported at 12‑times, according to market participants. Retail participation was described as subdued, yet the total subscription figure of 5.71 times overall reflects strong appetite across the board.

At the time of listing, the exchange’s market capitalisation was reported at ₹4.53 lakh crore, rising to ₹4.62 lakh crore later in the session, underscoring the scale of the transaction and the valuation placed on the platform.

Share price trajectory and market reaction

Trading activity on the debut day was marked by rapid price movements. After the opening at ₹1,800, the stock rose to ₹1,872.05 by 10:09 a.m. and peaked at ₹1,878 shortly thereafter. By 10:44 a.m., the price stood at ₹1,861.45, and at 12:03 p.m. the shares were quoted at ₹1,847.15 – nearly a 3 % rise from the offer price. The upward momentum continued, with the price reaching ₹1,844.30 at 1:02 p.m., a 2 % increase over the listing price of ₹1,800 and a 3 % rise over the IPO price.

Mid‑day trading data showed a net sell‑side pressure, with 4,37,72,98 shares sold against 3,66,14,51 bought, according to BSE figures at around 2:30 p.m. Despite this, the stock closed the session with a modest gain, ending at ₹1,818 on the BSE.

The broader market context was less favourable. The Sensex fell 1,247.71 points (1.67 %) to 73,580.54, while the Nifty 50 dropped 383.70 points (1.64 %) to 23,063.10, reflecting a sharp sell‑off led by banking and financial stocks. Nevertheless, the NSE’s debut remained insulated from the broader decline, delivering a positive return on the day.

Analyst coverage, valuation outlook and investor base expansion

Multiple brokerage houses initiated coverage of the newly listed stock. Emkay Global launched a BUY recommendation with a target price of ₹2,050 for September 27, citing a 24 % revenue CAGR and 26 % PAT CAGR over FY21‑26, and forecasting a 12 % revenue CAGR for FY27‑29. PL Capital offered an “Accumulate” rating with a target of ₹1,950, applying a 35‑times FY29E price‑to‑earnings multiple, while Macquarie assigned an “Outperform” rating and set a target of ₹1,965, highlighting the exchange’s dominant market share and technology platform.

Capwise Financial Services founder Naresh Biyani described the listing as a “landmark for Indian capital markets,” noting that the NSE is now publicly accountable and that the disciplined pricing reflected strong institutional demand rather than weak sentiment. He emphasized the importance of future regulatory decisions on derivatives, the exchange’s primary earnings engine, and framed the IPO as a green‑light for promoters, private‑equity funds and growth‑stage companies.

From an ownership perspective, the IPO dramatically broadened the shareholder base. NSE MD & CEO Ashish Chauhan stated that the exchange had previously counted roughly two lakh investors, and an additional 34 lakh joined after the listing, bringing the total to nearly 36 lakh. Bonanza senior research analyst Abhinav Tiwari echoed this expansion, noting the rise from around 2 lakh to almost 36 lakh shareholders, while also cautioning that the stock may need a full quarter for price discovery and that near‑term risks include reduced trading activity in the closing auction and potential selling pressure after the lock‑in period.

Overall, the NSE’s debut placed it among India’s top‑10 most valuable firms, a status confirmed by live updates during the listing day. The exchange’s entry onto the D‑Street aligns India with markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Germany, where the dominant exchange is publicly listed.

While the broader market faced a downturn, the NSE’s successful listing, strong subscription levels, and positive price performance underscore the platform’s central role in India’s financial infrastructure and its potential to attract continued institutional interest in the months ahead.

India’s National Stock Exchange listed at a 5% premium, making it the country’s second‑largest IPO and propelling the exchange into the top‑10 most valuable firms.

[299
499,1365,1368,2032,214
post-2209","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-finance","tag-indian-stock-market","tag-ipo","tag-listing","tag-nse","entry
["GET
