Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Shailesh Chandra told BusinessLine that, despite the positive sentiment generated by the GST 2.0 reforms over the past year, manufacturers are likely to implement incremental price hikes to safeguard margins.

Potential price hikes amid rising input costs

Chandra explained that the industry has so far seen a sub‑five‑percent increase in vehicle prices since the introduction of GST. He noted that, although original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) could have pursued more aggressive pricing after the tax change, the market instead experienced a wave of discounts. “The first thing which has gone away is the discounting because supply is slightly behind demand,” he said, adding that the reduced discounting reflects a tighter market balance.

The executive emphasized that the price rises to date have not matched the magnitude of the GST reduction, leaving “significant headroom” for further adjustments. While acknowledging that growth rates are expected to decelerate, Chandra stressed that demand remains robust at current price levels. He also warned that the inability to fully pass on higher commodity costs is compressing profit margins, making cost‑reduction initiatives a priority for the company.

When asked about the timing of the next price revision, Chandra said any future increase would be modest and phased. “Whenever we take the price increases, it will be in smaller escalations, so that it does not immediately impact demand. So, they will be progressive, incremental price increases that we’ll take over a period of time,” he explained. He pointed out that the company had already implemented a price increase in September, but described any subsequent hike as “premature to tell you” until a thorough review is completed.

Tata Motors launches Aeris compact sedan

On Friday, Tata Motors introduced a new compact sedan named Aeris, positioned to replace the outgoing Tigor model. The Aeris is offered at introductory ex‑showroom prices ranging from ₹5.29 lakh to ₹9.19 lakh. Chandra clarified that the model will be sold exclusively to private customers for personal use and will not be available for fleet or taxi operations.

At launch, the Aeris is available in both petrol and CNG variants, with an electric version slated for future release. The pricing strategy places the Aeris squarely within the affordable segment, aiming to attract buyers seeking a compact yet feature‑rich sedan.

Market dynamics and sales performance

Chandra highlighted that the Indian compact sedan market comprises roughly 3.40 lakh units annually. Although the segment’s share within the broader sedan category has been declining, its absolute volume has risen sharply. “In just the last one year, it has grown by about 25‑26 per cent, so it is a growing segment in terms of size,” he said, noting that the GST impact has created a clear customer segment interested in compact sedans.

Reflecting on recent sales data, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported a 59 percent year‑on‑year increase in domestic wholesales for August, dispatching 65,253 units to dealers compared with 41,001 units in the same month of the previous year. The strong dispatch figures underscore the company’s ability to capture demand despite the evolving pricing environment.

Looking ahead, Chandra reiterated that while the company enjoys “significant headroom” for pricing, the broader market will likely see a moderation in growth rates as input‑cost pressures persist. The incremental pricing approach, combined with the launch of the Aeris, is intended to sustain demand while protecting profitability amid a backdrop of supply‑demand tightness and higher commodity expenses.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles warned of another round of price increases as input costs rise, while unveiling the Aeris compact sedan priced between ₹5.29 lakh and ₹9.19 lakh.

[3
2409,2408,76,2407,2406
post-2231","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economy","tag-automotive-market","tag-compact-sedan","tag-gst","tag-price-hike","tag-tata-motors","entry
["GET
