The 28‑year‑old crossed the 42.195‑kilometre course in 2:11:37, shaving 22 seconds off his own national record and securing a bronze behind Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita (gold) and China’s Peiyou Feng (bronze).

Race dynamics and finish

Barwal entered the race with a realistic podium plan, aware that championship marathons rarely produce fast, record‑breaking paces. At the halfway point the lead pack had recorded 1:05, matching Barwal’s half‑marathon best of 1:03 and allowing him to stay comfortably within the leading group. By the 35‑kilometre mark only Yamashita remained alongside him, and the two stayed together for the final five kilometres. In the last 2‑3 kilometres Barwal described the stretch as the toughest, echoing the fatigue he felt in his earlier Rotterdam effort.

Although gold was out of reach, Barwal finished roughly half a minute ahead of the rest of the field, guaranteeing a medal. He celebrated with a modest smile and a wave, his blue India bib the only national colour visible at the finish line, as no Indian flag was present and only his coaches and support staff were in the stadium.

Background and preparation

Barwal’s journey to Nagoya began in the village of Radabhanker, Mandi district, where he first ran for enjoyment in school. He progressed from 800 metres to the 3,000 metre under‑18 national championships in 2015, finishing fourth. The following year he joined the Indian Army, where a VO₂ max test of 78 – comparable to elite Kenyan runners – identified his potential for long‑distance events.

His first major medal came in 2022, a silver in the 10,000 metres at the National Open Athletics Championships, followed by a bronze at the Asian Half Marathon Championships in 2023. Though he initially focused on 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres, coaches encouraged a move to the marathon. After a fall during a training run delayed his debut, Barwal finally attempted the distance at the Rotterdam Marathon, where he broke a 48‑year‑old Indian record but faded near the finish.

American coach Scott Simmons, who has guided Barwal for the past half‑year, believed a steady 2:11‑2:12 pace would suit the championship setting. Simmons noted that while many entrants had faster personal bests – eleven of the nineteen had times quicker than Barwal, with five under 2:06 – none were likely to push the pace aggressively in a tactical race.

Barwal’s preparation involved three intensive training blocks in Colorado Springs, where he ran alongside athletes posting sub‑2:05 marathon times. Simmons described “hard 40‑kilometre runs, tempo work and three marathon simulations,” and said a WhatsApp group of Kenyan runners predicted Barwal could aim for 2:07‑2:08 under ideal conditions. The training also maintained his 10,000 metre speed, a factor that helped him stay with the leading pack.

Significance for Indian athletics

The bronze marks India’s first marathon medal at the Asian Games since the 1982 edition, and the first earned outside Indian territory. Barwal’s own words captured the moment: “I’m really happy that after a very long time, after so many years, India has been able to win a medal in the marathon at the Asian Games. This is a huge achievement for me.”

His achievement reflects broader investment in Indian distance running, with the Athletics Federation and the Reliance Foundation Athletics programme providing structured, multi‑month training cycles rather than short‑term preparations. Simmons highlighted that Barwal’s three‑month Colorado block represented a shift from earlier, less‑systematic approaches.

Barwal’s medal also underscores the growing depth of Indian long‑distance talent, as his progression from school‑level races to an Asian Games podium illustrates the potential for further breakthroughs. With a new national record of 2:11:37 and a historic podium finish, Barwal has set a benchmark for future Indian marathoners.

Himachal Pradesh’s Havaldar Sawan Barwal claimed bronze at the Nagoya Asian Games marathon, breaking a 44‑year medal drought and setting a new national record.

[299
1661,216,2420,2422,2421
post-2241","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-asian-games","tag-india","tag-marathon","tag-record","tag-sawan-barwal","entry
["GET
