The BSE Sensex slipped 399.22 points, or 0.53%, to 73,895.74, while the Nifty 50 dropped 205.9 points, or 0.88%, to 23,140.5. Over the seven‑week period, both indices have shed more than 5% each, underscoring persistent pressure on market sentiment.

Key drivers of the weekly slide

Analysts point to a confluence of domestic and international factors that kept investors cautious. Renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushed Brent crude oil higher, adding cost pressures on energy‑intensive sectors. At the same time, global bond yields rose, making fixed‑income assets comparatively more attractive and prompting a rotation away from equities.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) intensified their selling, extending a five‑week streak of net outflows. Over the week, FIIs off‑loaded equities worth ₹11,490.03 crore. By contrast, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued to buy, netting purchases of ₹16,398.15 crore. The divergent behavior of foreign and domestic capital flows contributed to the market’s uneven performance.

The Indian rupee, which had been on a two‑week losing streak, managed a marginal rebound, gaining five paise to close at 95.82 per U.S. dollar, compared with 95.87 a week earlier. Throughout the week the currency traded in a narrow band of 95.56–95.94, reflecting heightened volatility but a slight improvement in the final session.

Sectoral and index performance

Sectoral indices delivered mixed results. The Nifty IT index fell 2.4%, while the Nifty Private Bank index declined 1.5% and the Nifty Energy index slipped close to 1%. Conversely, the Nifty Realty index emerged as the top performer, gaining 3%. Consumer‑durables, pharmaceutical and FMCG indices each rose around 1%.

Among broader market segments, the Nifty Small‑Cap 100 slipped 0.8%. Notable decliners included Ather Energy, Pine Labs, Tata Chemicals, Cholamandalam Financial Holdings, Piramal Finance, CreditAccess Grameen, Capri Global Capital, Central Depository Services and Firstsource Solutions. Gains were recorded by Whirlpool of India, Wockhardt, Bandhan Bank, Welspun Corp, HBL Engineering, Ola Electric Mobility and Brainbees Solutions.

The Nifty Mid‑Cap 100 fell 2% for the week. Heavy losses were seen in PB Fintech, One 97 Communications (Paytm), Oracle Financial Services Software, L&T Finance, Container Corporation of India, Adani Total Gas and Tata Investment Corporation, with declines ranging from 7% to 33%. In contrast, Patanjali Foods, Mankind Pharma, ICICI Lombard General Insurance, Phoenix Mills, Steel Authority of India and Oberoi Realty posted gains of 4% to 10%.

Market capitalisation and heavyweight impact

The total market capitalisation of BSE‑listed companies contracted by more than ₹2 lakh crore during the week, a decline driven largely by losses in several heavyweight stocks. Bharti Airtel emerged as the biggest drag on market value, followed by Infosys, Bajaj Finance and Bajaj Finserv. On the opposite side of the ledger, UltraTech Cement, Titan Company and HDFC Bank were the largest contributors to wealth creation, offsetting some of the broader market weakness.

Overall, the combination of higher crude oil prices, rising global yields, sustained foreign fund outflows and a still‑weakening rupee created a challenging environment for Indian equities. While domestic institutional buying provided a modest counterbalance, the net effect was a continuation of the bearish trend that has now persisted for seven weeks.

Investors will be watching upcoming macroeconomic data and geopolitical developments closely, as any shift in oil prices, bond yields or foreign fund sentiment could influence the direction of the market in the weeks ahead.

India’s Sensex and Nifty 50 fell for a seventh straight week, driven by higher crude prices, rising global yields and continued foreign fund outflows.

[299
2436,1843,1913,2073,2219
post-2253","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-fiis","tag-indian-markets","tag-nifty-50","tag-rupee","tag-sector-performance","entry
["GET
