The technology combines AI‑based super‑resolution with frame‑generation techniques, allowing games to be rendered at lower resolutions and then upscaled to full‑HD or higher, while also inserting AI‑created intermediate frames. Qualcomm says the combined effect cuts the GPU’s rendering workload by roughly half and simultaneously improves visual fidelity and frame rates.

How ANF works

ANF is built from two complementary features. The first, Super Resolution, reconstructs a full‑resolution image from a coarsely rendered input. It does this by analyzing the current frame together with prior frames, depth maps and motion‑vector data that describe how objects move across the scene. By leveraging this temporal and spatial information, the AI model can restore fine details that would otherwise be lost at low resolution.

The second feature, Frame Generation, is an AI‑driven frame‑interpolation method. It creates new frames that sit between two existing frames, effectively increasing the perceived frame rate without requiring the GPU to render each individual frame. When both features operate together, the system can render a game at half the native resolution and produce only half the original frame count, yet deliver a final output that appears at full resolution and at double the original frame rate.

Demo at Snapdragon Summit 2026

The capabilities of ANF were showcased at Snapdragon Summit 2026, a developer conference held on Maui, Hawaii. Attendees were presented with side‑by‑side demonstrations of a game running with ANF enabled versus disabled. With the AI suite active, observers noted a marked improvement in fine‑detail rendering and a smoother video experience, confirming the practical benefits of the technology in real‑world gaming scenarios.

ANF is already available on the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset and will be supported on subsequent releases. For higher‑end devices, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, which incorporates dedicated “Adreno matrix cores” that embed AI processing directly within the GPU. This integration eliminates the need to offload AI tasks to a separate neural‑processing unit (NPU), reducing data movement, latency, and power consumption.

Industry context and future outlook

The concept of AI‑assisted super‑resolution originated in the PC market. NVIDIA introduced its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology in 2018, using AI to upscale lower‑resolution renders to higher resolutions. Over time, NVIDIA added AI‑based frame generation, making DLSS a cornerstone of its GeForce RTX graphics line.

Qualcomm’s ANF represents the first full‑scale adoption of both super‑resolution and frame‑generation for smartphones. By shifting part of the rendering burden to AI, mobile chipmakers can address the longstanding trade‑off between image quality and power efficiency in handheld gaming. The approach promises to keep battery drain low while delivering the high‑frame‑rate, high‑resolution experiences that gamers increasingly expect.

Looking ahead, rumors have surfaced about Qualcomm’s next‑generation flagship SoC, internally codenamed “Honu,” slated for a 2027 launch. The chip is expected to stay on TSMC’s 2 nm “N2P” process and target clock speeds of 5.3–5.4 GHz. Early indications suggest that benchmark gains, measured by Geekbench 6, may be modest—potentially under 10 % over the current Extreme Gen 6. Nonetheless, Qualcomm aims to keep single‑core power consumption on par with the existing Extreme Gen 6 and limit price increases, while TSMC’s progression toward a 1.4 nm node could eventually lower production costs.

These developments underline a broader shift in the smartphone SoC market. Rather than chasing raw performance numbers alone, manufacturers are emphasizing power efficiency and on‑chip AI capabilities. Technologies like ANF are likely to become key differentiators for future flagship phones, offering consumers richer visual experiences without sacrificing battery life.

Qualcomm introduced Adreno Neural Fusion, an AI‑powered graphics suite that halves rendering load while delivering higher image quality on its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset.

[299
2445,2447,2446,1771,1883
post-2263","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-ai-super-resolution","tag-chipset","tag-mobile-gaming","tag-qualcomm","tag-snapdragon","entry
["GET
