The selection, announced by Cricket South Africa, aims to give the Proteas a balanced mix of experience and emerging talent as both sides chase a place in the ICC World Test Championship 2027 Final.

Squad composition and key selections

The provisional list features captain Temba Bavuma leading a unit that includes seasoned batsmen Marques Ackerman, David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne. All‑rounder and spin options are represented by Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder and Senuran Muthusamy. The pace attack is bolstered by the inclusion of Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee, Dane Paterson and the returning star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada.

Rabada’s selection is notable because he is still recovering from a right hamstring injury that has kept him out of the ongoing ODI series against Australia. Coach Shukri Conrad said the senior pacer will have a chance to prove his fitness in an intra‑squad practice game scheduled before the Test series.

Three fast bowlers – Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman – are absent from the preliminary group as they continue rehabilitation from separate injuries. Their exclusion leaves room for the returning trio of Nortje, Coetzee and Paterson, who are expected to add depth and pace to the lineup.

Among the batting ranks, Marques Ackerman is the only uncapped player. He earned his place after a prolific spell with South Africa ‘A’, where he amassed more than 1,000 runs in ten red‑ball matches at an average of 82.92, including four centuries and a career‑best 256 against Bangladesh ‘A’ in August. Coach Conrad praised Ackerman’s leadership of the SA ‘A’ side and his performances, describing him as an important asset for the Test squad.

Conversely, rising star Dewald Brevis has been omitted from the Test group. Although he was the Player of the Series in the recent T20I tri‑series in Namibia, Conrad explained that Brevis is not yet considered one of the side’s best Test batters. The coach suggested that Brevis may be better suited to Test opportunities in the sub‑continent and could feature in ODIs later in the summer.

Coach Shukri Conrad’s outlook

Conrad highlighted the advantage of naming a larger preliminary group, noting that it provides flexibility to cover all bases and experiment with different bowling combinations. He emphasized that the upcoming two‑day intra‑squad match will offer a clearer picture of Rabada’s match readiness and allow the coaching staff to assess the overall balance of the squad.

Regarding Anrich Nortje, the 32‑year‑old’s return to the longest format has been under discussion since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Nortje expressed a desire to be available for all formats, and Conrad said the team will monitor his fitness closely over the next week. While Nortje’s first first‑class game since his last Test in 2023 is imminent, the coach cautioned that the management will decide later whether a Test match or another format is the best avenue for his international comeback.

Conrad also explained the rationale for releasing a preliminary squad at this stage. The group will convene in Durban on 1 October for an extended build‑up that includes training days, scenario‑based sessions and the intra‑squad match. This period will enable the staff to evaluate conditions and player form before trimming the list to the final 15‑man Test side.

Series schedule and broader context

The opening Test will run from 9 to 13 October in Durban, followed by the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha from 18 to 22 October, and the third at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town from 27 to 31 October. The three‑match series forms a crucial component of both nations’ campaigns to secure a spot in the 2027 World Test Championship Final.

South Africa currently enjoys a 2‑0 lead in the ODI series against Australia, an advantage that adds momentum heading into the Test matches. The Proteas hope to translate their limited‑overs success into the longer format, while Australia will look to bounce back after the ODI setbacks.

With a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising newcomers, the South African side appears poised to field a competitive unit. The final squad selection, expected after the Durban training camp, will determine whether the Proteas can maintain their winning trajectory and keep their World Test Championship aspirations alive.

South Africa has released an 18‑member preliminary squad for the first Test against Australia in Durban on October 9, with pacer Kagiso Rabada included despite a hamstring injury and several players omitted for rehab.

[299
1550,2523,2522,2516,1551,2521
post-2317","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-australia","tag-kagiso-rabada","tag-shukri-conrad","tag-south-africa","tag-test-cricket","tag-world-test-championship","entry
["GET
