The figure represents a 32.10% increase over the 3,23,391 units sold in the same month a year earlier, and a 6.17% rise from August’s 4,02,398 units. Data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) underscore the strength of the recovery, highlighting both a solid year‑to‑date trajectory and a widening share for electric vehicles.

Overall market performance

Year‑to‑date (YTD) passenger‑vehicle sales have surged to 25,44,187 units, marking a 24.48% improvement over the 20,43,813 units recorded during the same period last year. Growth was broadly balanced across geographic segments, with urban sales expanding by 32.11% and rural sales climbing by 32.09% on a year‑on‑year basis.

Fuel‑type composition also shifted noticeably. Petrol and ethanol‑blended models continued to dominate, holding a 41.27% share of total sales. Diesel‑powered vehicles accounted for 17.74%, while CNG/LPG models contributed 23.11%. Hybrid vehicles represented 9.44% of the market, and fully electric vehicles (EVs) grew to 8.45%, reflecting accelerating consumer interest in greener powertrains.

Brand‑wise sales breakdown

Maruti Suzuki retained its commanding position at the top of the market, delivering 1,69,132 units in September 2026. The company’s share stood at 39.59%, and its monthly volume rose modestly from the 1,67,200 units sold in August 2026.

Mahindra & Mahindra secured the second‑largest slot, posting 57,343 units. The automaker edged ahead of Tata Motors by a narrow margin of 89 units, as Tata recorded 57,254 units for the month. Tata’s market share slipped to 13.40% from 13.76% in September 2025, indicating a slight contraction despite overall market growth.

Hyundai Motor India followed with 50,201 units, a significant jump from the 38,187 units sold in September 2025. Toyota Kirloskar Motor posted 28,050 units, translating into a 6.57% market share. Kia India’s sales rose sharply to 26,663 units, up from 18,274 units a year earlier, lifting its share to 6.24%.

Skoda Group delivered 8,479 units, though its market share fell to 1.98% from 2.31% a year earlier. JSW‑MG recorded 6,475 units, up from 5,698 units, yet its share declined to 1.52%.

Honda Cars improved its performance, selling 5,283 units, up from 3,707 units in September 2025. Renault’s sales climbed to 3,410 units, surpassing the 2,562 units recorded a year earlier. Nissan and VinFast each posted close to 3,000 units, with Nissan at 2,967 units and VinFast at 2,964 units.

In the luxury segment, BMW India sold 1,970 units, an increase from 1,357 units in the previous September. Mercedes-Benz India reported 1,768 units, though its market share slipped to 0.41% from 0.43% year‑on‑year.

Force Motors posted 1,332 units, a sharp rise from 511 units a year earlier, boosting its share to 0.31% from 0.16%. Stellantis Group’s combined Jeep and Citroën sales reached 1,076 units, up from 641 units. BYD recorded 836 units, while Jaguar sold 581 units. The “Others” category, which aggregates smaller players, logged 1,429 units, down from 2,022 units in September 2025.

The data collectively illustrate a market that is not only expanding in absolute terms but also diversifying across fuel types and vehicle segments. While conventional petrol and diesel models continue to dominate, the rise of hybrids and EVs signals a gradual shift toward more sustainable mobility solutions. The narrow margin between Mahindra and Tata highlights intense competition among Indian manufacturers, while the continued strength of Maruti Suzuki underscores its entrenched brand loyalty.

Analysts note that the month‑on‑month improvement from August to September, coupled with the strong year‑to‑date growth, suggests that demand is being bolstered by both improved consumer confidence and the rollout of new model launches. The increase in EV share to 8.45% also reflects the impact of government incentives and expanding charging infrastructure, factors that are likely to drive further adoption in the coming months.

Overall, September 2026 emerges as a pivotal month for India’s automotive sector, marking a decisive step toward higher volumes, broader fuel‑type representation, and intensified competition among both legacy and emerging manufacturers.

Car retail sales in India reached 4.27 lakh units in September 2026, a 32.10% year‑on‑year increase, while electric‑vehicle sales grew to 8.45% of the market.

[299
2708,2709,770,2710,2711,481
post-2471","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-automotive","tag-car-sales","tag-electric-vehicles","tag-india-market","tag-mahindra","tag-maruti-suzuki","entry
["GET
