The central bank described the move as a shift to a “calibrated tightening” stance, marking the first rate hike in four years as it seeks to curb persistent price pressures.

At 2:00 p.m. local time, the benchmark Sensex was down 506.50 points, or 0.69 per cent, trading at 72,561.31. The broader Nifty 50 index fell 192.60 points, a 0.85 per cent drop, to settle at 22,583.50. Earlier in the session, at 1:00 p.m., the Sensex had been off 244.19 points (0.33 per cent) at 72,823.62, while the Nifty 50 was down 124.40 points (0.55 per cent) at 22,651.70, indicating that the decline accelerated after the RBI’s announcement.

Sectoral performance and market breadth

Within the broader market, the Nifty Mid‑Cap index slipped 0.61 per cent, whereas the Nifty Small‑Cap managed a modest gain of 0.23 per cent. The Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Private sectors were among the few that posted advances following the policy decision, while the Nifty Metal index emerged as the biggest laggard.

Banking stocks attracted particular attention. Religare Broking’s analyst Ajit Mishra highlighted Axis Bank, AU Small Finance Bank, and Punjab National Bank (PNB) as having favourable technical setups, suggesting that the sector could continue to outperform despite the overall market weakness.

Conversely, the fast‑moving consumer goods (FMCG) segment lagged, with Colgate Palmolive (India), Patanjali Foods, and Godfrey Phillips India recorded as the top losers in the Nifty FMCG index.

Analyst commentary on the rate hike

Geojit Investments’ chief investment strategist VK Vijayakumar projected that the RBI is likely to implement two additional rate hikes in the coming months. He argued that a tighter monetary stance could be beneficial for the banking sector, which stands to gain from higher net interest margins.

Supporting this view, Sujan Hajra, chief economist and executive director at Anand Rathi Group, described the 25‑basis‑point increase as a “pre‑emptive insurance measure” rather than the onset of an aggressive tightening cycle. Hajra’s assessment suggests that the RBI is aiming to safeguard the economy against inflationary shocks while maintaining flexibility for future policy moves.

Market volatility and external factors

The Nifty India Volatility Index (VIX) rose 5.2 per cent to 14.32, reflecting heightened expectations of near‑term market turbulence. The increase in the VIX underscores investor uncertainty in the wake of the rate hike and broader macro‑economic concerns.

During a live press briefing, the RBI governor addressed the impact of a weaker monsoon season, noting that measures to improve irrigation and promote climate‑resilient crop varieties have mitigated the effect on household incomes. He indicated that while some impact remains, the overall resilience of consumer spending is expected to hold.

The governor also commented on the United States’ 100 per cent tariff on certain Indian exports, acknowledging that the full ramifications are not yet clear. He emphasized that existing trade agreements should help cushion any adverse effects.

Corporate earnings amid market weakness

Amid the broader market decline, Kanohar Electricals posted a striking earnings surprise. The company’s net profit for the April‑June quarter of fiscal year 2027 surged 139.5 per cent year‑on‑year to ₹27.3 crore, prompting its share price to jump roughly 20 per cent during the session.

The strong performance of Kanohar Electricals stood out as a rare bright spot in an otherwise subdued trading day, illustrating how individual corporate results can still drive stock‑specific rallies despite macro‑level headwinds.

Overall, the market’s reaction to the RBI’s policy shift highlights the delicate balance policymakers face between curbing inflation and sustaining growth. With the central bank signaling the possibility of further tightening, investors will be closely watching upcoming data releases and corporate earnings for clues on the trajectory of India’s economy.

The Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5%, prompting the Sensex to fall over 500 points and the Nifty 50 to slide below 22,600.

[299
198,1687,2031,1686,1373
post-2492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-interest-rate","tag-nifty","tag-rbi","tag-sensex","tag-stock-market","entry
["GET
