After making his debut under head coach Gautam Gambhir on the England tour earlier this year, the teenager now finds himself waiting for a place in the playing XI as India prepares for the West Indies T20 series.

Early rise and recent setbacks

Sooryavanshi’s ascent began under the guidance of former India great VVS Laxman, who selected the youngster for tours to Zimbabwe and the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi‑Nagoya, Japan. To accommodate the prodigy in the batting order during the Asian Games, established wicket‑keeper‑batter Sanju Samson was moved down to the No. 3 position. The move paid off, as Sooryavanshi performed well enough to earn a place in the squad for the West Indies series.

However, with Gautam Gambhir returning to the bench for the series, Sooryavanshi was again left out of the starting lineup. The coach has made it clear that the teenager will need to wait for his next opportunity, despite the promise he showed on debut.

His first appearance for India came on the England tour, where he faced a challenging opening spell from Jofra Archer and his fellow pacers. Though the start was difficult, Sooryavanshi later found his rhythm in Zimbabwe and displayed “excellent touch” at the Asian Games, earning praise for his composure on a big stage.

Coach Gambhir’s stance and Samson’s form

Gautam Gambhir, who took charge as head coach earlier this year, has spoken openly about the selection dilemma. He described dropping Sanju Samson for the England tour as “the toughest decision” he has made since assuming the role. Gambir also highlighted Samson’s achievements, noting that the Kerala batter was named Player of the Tournament in the 2026 T20 World Cup after scoring 97 not out, 89 and another 89 in the knockout stages.

Since those heroics, Samson’s form has dipped. In 11 innings he has recorded only two half‑centuries, both scored in Delhi, a venue traditionally favorable to batters. Six of those innings ended in single‑digit dismissals. In the first T20I against West Indies, Samson opened alongside Abhishek Sharma but was out after just nine balls, caught by Akeal Hosein. Former West Indian fast bowler Ian Bishop, a vocal admirer of Samson, questioned the batter’s consistency in the commentary box.

Gambhir reiterated his confidence in Samson, stating, “He doesn’t need to give me any credit. His talent itself is enough for him to be in the dressing room. Someone doesn’t become Player of the Tournament in a World Cup without having the talent.” The coach added that unless Samson’s “lean run continues,” Sooryavanshi may have to wait even longer for a chance to prove himself.

When asked about Sooryavanshi’s future, Gambhir told Jio Hotstar, “From Vaibhav’s point of view, it was again a very clear conversation that he has to wait for his opportunity. We know the kind of talent he has. We know what he can do.” The coach’s comments underline a clear hierarchy: Samson’s place is defended on recent performance, while Sooryavanshi’s inclusion remains conditional on the senior batter’s form.

Psychological perspective and future outlook

Former India and Karnataka opener Sujith Somasunder, now a sports psychologist, believes the waiting period could be a crucial developmental phase for the teenager. Speaking to Times of India, Somasunder said, “Sooryavanshi has achieved what he has achieved on his own. Now, suddenly, his status in the cricketing world has moved to a different tangent.” He emphasized that the young cricketer must focus on what he can control – his preparation, mindset, and response to external pressure.

“Sooryavanshi has to realise that, ‘I am now going to get into the water, so I need to know how to swim,’” Somasunder explained. “Similarly, he needs to understand that the world I am in now is a little different from what it was before I became Sooryavanshi.” The psychologist warned that navigating a “new world” demands both personal discipline and support from the cricketing establishment.

Drawing a parallel with Australian great Ricky Ponting, Somasunder noted that early identification and structured grooming can help prodigious talent transition into leadership. He recalled that the Australian Institute of Sport reportedly identified Ponting as a future captain and invested in his development. “If they saw that he could be the future captain of the Australian team, then they needed to groom him to behave appropriately and develop the right leadership skills,” he said.

He suggested that Indian cricket could adopt a similar approach, looking beyond immediate performance to prepare Sooryavanshi for the “pressures that come with being one of the country’s most talked‑about young cricketers.” Somasunder also contrasted cultural attitudes, describing Australia as more “task‑oriented” and India as “relationship‑oriented.” He argued that understanding these nuances could help the teenager adapt to the hierarchical nature of Indian cricket, where deference to senior players and coaches is customary.

For Sooryavanshi, the current bench stint may be his first lesson in the less glamorous side of international sport. While his debut and subsequent performances have already made him a household name, the patience required now could be as vital as the raw talent that earned him a spot at such a young age. As Somasunder summed up, “He will also need to learn and understand how to navigate this situation for himself.”

With the West Indies series underway and Samson’s form under scrutiny, the next few months will determine whether the 15‑year‑old gets a chance to cement his place or continues to wait for a breakthrough. The combination of coach Gambhir’s strategic selections, Samson’s performance trajectory, and the psychological guidance offered by experts like Somasunder will shape the path forward for one of India’s most intriguing cricketing stories.

At 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already starred for India, but with Sanju Samson back in form and coach Gautam Gambhir’s selections, the youngster remains on the bench.

[7
2358,1555,1743,2166,2014
post-2530","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports","tag-gautam-gambhir","tag-indian-cricket","tag-sanju-samson","tag-t20i","tag-vaibhav-sooryavanshi","entry
["GET
