Both contests saw the DMK finish second, indicating that the party’s core electorate remained largely intact even though it entered the races without most of its previous coalition partners.

Vote trends in Dharapuram

In the Dharapuram constituency, the DMK’s tally slipped to 57,370 votes, down from 64,373 recorded in the April 2026 assembly election. Analysts note that the lower figure must be weighed against a reduced voter turnout compared with the earlier poll. The decline is also linked to the absence of erstwhile allies such as the Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Communist parties and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), all of which had supported the DMK in the previous contest.

The ruling TVK candidate, former AIADMK legislator P. Sathyabama, garnered 66,841 votes, falling short of the 81,100 votes she secured as an AIADMK candidate in the general election. Even after adjusting for turnout, the numbers suggest she could not retain the full AIADMK vote base, despite the defections that had bolstered TVK’s profile.

A senior DMK leader and former minister described the Dharapuram outcome as an “honourable defeat”. He highlighted that the constituency lies in the Kongu region, traditionally an AIADMK stronghold, and that former chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami remains a well‑known figure there, factors that likely limited the DMK’s performance.

Madurantakam results and implications

In Madurantakam, the AIADMK candidate Maragatham Kumaravel, who contested on a TVK ticket, obtained 74,048 votes – more than 5,000 higher than her count as an AIADMK candidate in the previous assembly election. The TVK’s own candidate, Ezhil Katherine, had received 62,090 votes in that earlier poll. The increase for Kumaravel raises questions about how much of the AIADMK’s traditional support followed her after she switched allegiance to TVK.

The DMK’s candidate, I. Paranthaman, a prominent party figure but not a local resident, secured 54,008 votes. This was a drop from the 59,838 votes earned by the party’s earlier candidate, S. Amulu Ponmalar, in the April 2026 election. Observers attribute part of the shortfall to the missing VCK support, which enjoys a strong presence in the area, and to the Pattali Makkal Katchi’s (PMK) decision to stay neutral, potentially fragmenting its Vanniyar vote bank. The PMK had previously aligned with AIADMK during the assembly poll.

DMK president M. K. Stalin interpreted the combined vote totals of all parties that opposed the ruling TVK as evidence that a majority of voters rejected the government. He emphasized that, despite the loss of allied parties, the DMK’s ability to stay in second place across both constituencies signaled resilience in its voter base.

Following the results, the same senior DMK leader who praised the Dharapuram outcome added, “In Madurantakam too, we have retained our vote bank even though our allies have switched camps. We need to concentrate on the section of young voters who have grown fond of the TVK and the screen‑crafted charisma of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. We will evolve a strategy to overcome the shortcomings.” The statement underscores the party’s focus on youth voters and on countering the media‑driven appeal of TVK’s chief minister.

The bye‑election data also highlight the strategic importance of alliances in Tamilaga politics. While the DMK contested without most former partners, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) remained part of the DMK‑led coalition that entered the June assembly election. The contrast suggests that a united front could potentially boost the DMK’s vote share in future contests.

Overall, the two bye‑elections illustrate a mixed picture: the DMK’s vote count fell in both seats, yet its relative position as the principal challenger to TVK stayed intact. The reduced tallies appear linked to lower turnout and the loss of allied party support rather than a fundamental erosion of the party’s core electorate. As the political calendar moves forward, both the DMK and TVK will likely assess how alliance dynamics and voter sentiment, especially among younger demographics, will shape upcoming electoral battles.

The recent Madurantakam and Dharapuram bye‑elections show the DMK kept most of its voters despite standing without former allies, reinforcing its role as the chief opposition to the ruling TVK.

[299
2807,2566,2808,559,2809
post-2560","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-byelection","tag-dmk","tag-tamilaga-politics","tag-tvk","tag-vote-share","entry
["GET
