Zverev’s ascent makes him the first German to claim the year‑end top spot and the oldest first‑time holder of the ranking at 29 years old.

Alcaraz’s early exit in Shanghai

On Monday, the 23‑year‑old Spaniard, seeded second in the tournament, was beaten 7‑5, 7‑6(4) by unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs. The match lasted just over two hours and saw Bergs break Alcaraz’s serve three times. Alcaraz, who had recently defended his Japan Open title, entered Shanghai still regaining form after a wrist injury that kept him off the tour for nearly five months. He had returned at the US Open in late August, reached the quarter‑finals, and was building momentum before the upset.

The loss placed Alcaraz among a string of high‑profile casualties at the Masters 1000 event, joining Novak Djokovic, a 24‑time Grand Slam champion, and US Open runner‑up Ben Shelton. Bergs, 27, described the victory as a relief and a sign that he can now compete with the sport’s elite after years of respecting top players.

Bergs’ breakthrough performance

Facing a player of Alcaraz’s stature for the first time in a Masters‑level match, Bergs delivered a composed all‑court game that suited the quick conditions in Shanghai. Although Alcaraz had won their only previous encounter in the last‑16 of the Japan Open a year earlier, Bergs showed no intimidation and capitalised on key moments to secure what he called “the biggest victory of his career.” He highlighted the importance of experience against top opponents and expressed pride in finally translating that experience into a win.

Zverev clinches year‑end No.1

The result in Shanghai unlocked the year‑end No.1 ranking for Zverev, who had already collected titles in Paris and New York earlier in the season. His path to the top was aided by the absence of Italian Jannik Sinner, who has not competed since beating Zverev in the Wimbledon final on July 12 because of a knee injury. Sinner missed the North American hard‑court swing, the US Open and the ongoing Asian swing, leaving Zverev’s points unchallenged.

At 29, Zverev becomes the oldest player to claim the year‑end No.1 ranking for the first time. He also joins a short list of German players to ever hold the world’s top spot. In a statement, Zverev called the achievement “a dream come true,” noting the extensive work and effort required, especially after returning from an ankle injury suffered in the 2022 French Open semi‑finals.

Looking ahead, Zverev will sit out the European indoor season and the ATP Finals in Turin, a tournament he has won in each of the previous two years. He will continue his Shanghai campaign, facing Kazakhstan’s 19th seed Alexander Bublik in the round of 16.

The ATP year‑end rankings now reflect a season in which injuries, unexpected upsets and strategic scheduling reshaped the hierarchy at the sport’s summit. Zverev’s consistency across Grand Slam victories and Masters events, combined with Alcaraz’s untimely loss, has set a new benchmark for German tennis and underscored the depth of competition on the men’s tour.

Alexander Zverev secured the ATP year‑end No.1 ranking after Carlos Alcaraz’s surprise loss to Zizou Bergs at the Shanghai Masters.

[7
1899,2921,2922,2923,374
post-2650","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports","tag-alexander-zverev","tag-atp-rankings","tag-carlos-alcaraz","tag-shanghai-masters","tag-tennis","entry
["GET
