Ryan Rickelton, primarily a white‑ball wicketkeeper, has been named the designated keeper, while veteran Kyle Verreynne has been omitted from the playing XI.

Wicketkeeping switch

Verreynne was seen walking across the St George’s Park outfield on Thursday, carrying his batting gear, when a teammate asked him why he was “losing the gloves.” The comment, made in a light‑hearted tone, hinted at the decision that had already been taken. Verreynne, who is widely regarded as South Africa’s best gloveman, was dropped not because of his keeping but because of a prolonged dip in batting form. He has not reached a half‑century in his last 13 completed first‑class innings, a stretch that includes the 13 and 1 runs he made in the first Test at Kingsmead, where Australia won by 214 runs.

Fielding coach Kruger van Wyk, a former New Zealand Test keeper, confirmed that Rickelton travelled to the training camp with his full wicket‑keeping kit. “Ricks always comes along on the early bus to training. Even when he isn’t keeping in matches he still does his work, in the white‑ball stuff as well,” van Wyk told reporters. He added that Rickelton’s diligence means he does not have to “dust off the gloves and start over again.”

Van Wyk praised Verreynne’s professionalism, noting that the veteran “fronted up at training today” and was the first to help out, displaying the “real team‑man” attitude that the squad values.

Rickelton’s batting challenges

Rickelton’s selection as keeper comes at a time when his own batting credentials are under scrutiny. He has opened the South African innings in 13 of his 29 Test innings, while also batting at No 5, No 4, No 3 and once at No 6. His career‑best score of 259 came against Pakistan at Newlands in January 2025, but since that innings he has passed fifty only once in the last 11 completed trips to the crease.

The coaching staff have not disclosed where Rickelton will bat in the upcoming match. The only confirmed change to the batting line‑up is the inclusion of Matthew Breetzke, who replaces Tristan Stubbs after the latter’s injury. Breetzke appears likely to open, leaving Rickelton’s batting position open to speculation.

Van Wyk acknowledged that the added responsibility of keeping will alter Rickelton’s preparation. “It does change things compared to opening,” he said. “You’ll probably face an older ball and you’ll face more spin at the start of your innings.” Yet he stressed that modern players switch formats and roles more fluidly than in the past, making such adjustments “not as difficult as it was for players 15 years ago.”

Preparation ahead of the second Test

During Thursday’s training session, Rickelton spent an hour and forty‑five minutes on wicket‑keeping drills before moving on to a 40‑minute batting session. Van Wyk observed that Rickelton is “incredibly obsessed with cricket,” a trait that the coach believes will serve him well as he takes on dual responsibilities.

Although most of Rickelton’s keeping experience has come in limited‑overs cricket—he has kept in 37 of his 72 first‑class matches and in 183 of his 269 white‑ball games, including 11 ODIs and 12 T20Is—van Wyk expressed confidence in his ability to handle the role in Test conditions. “He’s been exposed to high‑pressure situations in games. This is nothing new for him. His keeping has grown so much in the last two years. I think it’s going to be really good for Ricks to have the gloves. It will engage him in the game more, and that’s what he needs,” the coach said.

Van Wyk also noted that the technical aspects of keeping remain the same across formats. “It’s still a ball coming at you. The movements are the same. The way you glove the ball is exactly the same,” he explained, underscoring that the transition from white‑ball to red‑ball keeping is largely a matter of experience rather than skill set.

Conditions at St George’s Park may further mitigate the challenge. Forecasts predict rain for the first two days of the match, potentially limiting the amount of spin that typically tests a keeper’s footwork. Moreover, the pitch is described as the country’s slowest, where bounce is more pronounced than turn, meaning Rickelton is unlikely to face the same volume of spin as he would in subcontinental conditions.

After completing his training, Rickelton headed to the dressing room, where a teammate offered a simple “Good luck.” He responded with a smile and a bright “Thanks!” before moving on. The exchange captured the camaraderie within the squad as they ready themselves for a crucial series‑deciding Test.

With the second Test looming, South Africa will rely on Rickelton’s adaptability both behind the stumps and with the bat. The decision to replace Verreynne reflects a broader strategy to inject fresh responsibility into the side, hoping that the added workload will sharpen Rickelton’s focus and contribute positively to the team’s overall performance.

South Africa has selected Ryan Rickelton as wicketkeeper for the second Test against Australia, dropping Kyle Verreynne amid concerns over the latter’s batting form.

[299
1550,3002,3001,3003,2516,3004
post-2720","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-australia","tag-kyle-verreynne","tag-ryan-rickelton","tag-second-test","tag-south-africa","tag-wicketkeeping","entry
["GET
