The change, described as “accelerated app launches,” appears in the latest Release Preview update and is intended to make the browser open more quickly when it is already running in the background.

What the update changes

The update, identified by Knowledge Base article KB5127936, was delivered to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview channel on October 16, 2026. It moves the Windows 11 25H2 branch to build 26200.9807 and the 26H2 branch to build 26300.9807. According to the Microsoft changelog, the operating system now “routes your request directly to the running instance instead of first starting an extra, temporary process.” By eliminating that intermediate step, the launch path is shortened, which the vendor says is most noticeable on devices that are multitasking heavily.

The improvement applies only to “warm” launches—situations where Edge is already active in memory. Edge’s own Startup boost feature keeps core processes alive even after the user closes the visible window, making warm launches common. A cold launch, such as the first time Edge is opened after a system restart, does not benefit from the change, and Microsoft has not disclosed the exact time savings.

Testing the impact

Testing was performed on a virtual machine with 4 GB of RAM, a configuration that typically exhibits sluggish behavior. Before installing KB5127936, the tester recorded Edge’s launch time from the taskbar after a fresh restart and noted that it opened “fairly quickly.” However, when the taskbar launch was attempted while the Microsoft Store and Paint were already running, a noticeable delay was observed.

After applying the update, the same sequence was repeated. Edge opened at the same speed as before when launched from a fresh state, but when Store and Paint were active, the browser opened “much quicker.” The tester attributes this improvement to the accelerated launch mechanism now routing the request straight to Edge’s existing window.

How the feature works and its broader implications

Many Windows applications are “multi‑instanced,” meaning each launch starts a new process and a new window. Edge, by contrast, is a “single‑instanced” app; launching a second instance typically activates the first instance’s main window. Historically, Windows still created a temporary process for the second launch, which then handed off the request to the existing instance before exiting. Microsoft calls this extra step a “pointless middleman.”

To remove the middleman, Microsoft introduced an experimental API that allows a running app to register a window with the operating system. When the user clicks the app’s Start menu tile, taskbar icon, or a link that the app handles, Windows can send the request directly to that window. The Microsoft Learn page titled “Register your application for accelerated warm launches,” dated October 2025, outlines the developer requirements. The API is classified as a Limited Access Feature; developers must obtain an unlock token from Microsoft. Registration occurs through the experimental interface IExperimentalAPIInvoker, and acceleration applies only to protocols for which the app is the default handler. Additionally, apps must retain their own single‑instance logic because the feature does not cover every launch scenario.

Because the APIs are not yet publicly open, Edge’s adoption does not guarantee immediate speed gains for other single‑instance apps such as Spotify or Discord. However, if Microsoft expands access, any background‑resident app could potentially avoid the temporary process and benefit from faster activation.

Microsoft has previously pursued other strategies to improve launch times. Edge’s “Startup boost” launches core Edge processes in the background so they are ready when the user opens the browser. Office applications receive a similar boost, with a task that keeps Word loaded in a paused state on machines that have at least 8 GB of RAM. File Explorer also received a preload in earlier testing, though that preload added roughly 35 MB of RAM usage and still opened slower than the Windows 10 version.

The accelerated launch approach differs by reducing work rather than increasing memory consumption. Rather than keeping additional processes alive, Windows simply skips the creation of a process that would have performed a hand‑off. The same article notes that WinUI is being made lighter on RAM, and the upcoming Windows 11 26H2 build reportedly uses 2 GB less memory than prior versions, suggesting a broader push toward a snappier, less memory‑hungry operating system.

Microsoft’s rollout schedule indicates that the optional update containing the accelerated Edge launch should appear later in the month of the announcement. Devices that receive the November 2026 Patch Tuesday update on November 10 are also expected to receive the change, though the gradual rollout means some PCs may see it later.

In summary, the Windows 11 Release Preview build introduces a targeted optimization that removes an unnecessary process when launching Edge on a busy system. Early testing on modest hardware shows a perceptible speed boost in multitasking scenarios. The feature is currently limited to Edge and to warm launches, but the underlying API could be opened to other single‑instance applications in the future, potentially delivering broader performance improvements across the Windows ecosystem.

A Windows 11 Release Preview build now routes Edge launches directly to a running instance, cutting out a temporary process and speeding up warm starts.

[299
3057,3058,3056,2153,3055
post-2764","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-accelerated-app-launch","tag-app-performance","tag-microsoft-edge","tag-software-update","tag-windows-11","entry
["GET
