The agency cautioned that isolated thunderstorms could also affect a long list of districts throughout the state, with wind speeds expected to reach between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour.

Forecast Overview

The warning covers a broad swathe of Tamil Nadu, naming districts that include Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Tiruppur, Tenkasi, Ranipet, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Salem, Theni, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Karur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Villupuram, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Tirupattur, Erode, Namakkal, as well as the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal. The department described the expected precipitation as “heavy to very heavy” for isolated locations within the listed areas.

According to the forecast, the most intense rain will fall on Monday, 19 October 2026, in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris districts. The same day is also expected to see widespread heavy rain across northern districts of the state. The following day, 20 October, the districts of Theni, Tirunelveli and Madurai are projected to receive very heavy rain, while the majority of the state should experience heavy showers.

Mid‑week, on Wednesday, 21 October, the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Madurai, Theni, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli and Dindigul districts are slated to encounter very heavy rain once more. After that period, the intensity of rainfall is anticipated to ease, with the Western Ghats, the delta region and the western districts still likely to see heavy precipitation.

Meteorological Factors

The department linked the current activity to a trough extending from Lakshadweep to the western‑central Bay of Bengal, positioned between 1.5 and 3.1 km above mean sea level. An additional upper‑air circulation was identified over north‑interior Karnataka and its surroundings at roughly 0.9 km altitude. These features have contributed to the active phase of the northeast monsoon that has already delivered rain to many parts of the state.

Further compounding the situation, an upper‑air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Arabian Sea gave rise to a low‑pressure area early on Sunday, 18 October 2026. The agency warned that this low could become more pronounced over the next day, reinforcing the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the affected districts.

Government Preparedness and Alerts

In response to the impending weather, the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) issued a mobile alert on the afternoon of 18 October, urging residents of Chennai to exercise caution as the city was expected to face very heavy rain. The alert advised the public to follow official weather updates. Earlier that afternoon, the Meteorological Department had placed a red alert on Chennai, which was later withdrawn by the evening.

Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management K.A. Sengottaiyan disclosed that the state government has mobilised a total of 1.40 lakh (140,000) personnel. This force includes government officials, volunteers from non‑governmental organisations and other helpers, all prepared to assist in rescue and relief operations. Speaking at Coimbatore airport, the minister also mentioned that 250 boats, along with their crews of fishermen, stand ready for deployment to flood‑prone areas.

The scale of the mobilisation reflects the authorities’ intent to mitigate the impact of the monsoon’s active phase, which has already produced scattered showers across Tamil Nadu. By positioning personnel and assets in advance, the government aims to respond swiftly to any flooding, landslides or other hazards that may arise as the heavy rains progress.

Residents in the listed districts have been advised to stay updated with official bulletins, avoid low‑lying areas prone to waterlogging, and cooperate with emergency teams should evacuation become necessary. The combination of meteorological forecasts, early warning messages and a sizable deployment of rescue resources underscores the state’s comprehensive approach to managing the monsoon’s challenges.

As the monsoon continues its active phase, weather officials will monitor the situation closely, issuing further advisories as needed. The public is urged to remain vigilant, heed instructions from local authorities, and prioritize safety during the period of intensified rainfall expected through the end of the week.

The state meteorological department warned of heavy to very heavy rain in dozens of districts as the northeast monsoon entered an active phase, prompting large‑scale rescue preparations.

[299
3072,326,3073,562,3071
post-2776","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-disaster-management","tag-monsoon","tag-rainfall","tag-tamil-nadu","tag-weather-alert","entry
["GET
