According to police and eyewitness accounts, a truck carrying a load of paddy descended a steep slope, broke through a series of five barricades, and collided with devotees waiting outside the temple premises. The vehicle then struck a wall near the gate, bringing the structure down.<\/p>\n<p>Police reports state that the driver, who fled the scene, was using GPS navigation to travel to Punjab. The driver and the truck\u2019s owner, both identified as residents of Punjab, were later apprehended in the neighbouring Dholpur district of Rajasthan. During interrogation, the driver claimed that the truck\u2019s brakes malfunctioned while climbing an uphill stretch, failed completely on the subsequent slope, and caused him to lose control. He said the vehicle veered left and entered the prohibited zone where the crowd was gathered. Authorities are also conducting a medical test to determine whether alcohol was a factor.<\/p>\n<p>Videos captured after the impact show panic among the crowd, with some devotees searching for missing relatives and others trapped beneath the vehicle. Two State Home Guard personnel were injured when the truck broke through the barricades.<\/p>\n<h2>Official response and investigation<\/h2>\n<p>Gwalior Superintendent of Police Dharm\u202fVir\u202fSingh confirmed that the injured were taken to multiple hospitals across the city. The Gwalior Collector, Ruchika\u202fChouhan, said that two to three critically injured patients were admitted to the trauma centre at the state\u2011run Gajra Raja Medical College, about ten others were placed in private hospitals, and the remaining victims were discharged after treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Minister Mohan\u202fYadav ordered the transfer of City (Vishwavidyalaya region) Superintendent of Police Ravi\u202fBhadoriya on grounds of alleged negligence. Eight police personnel\u2014including three town inspectors, a traffic inspector, a head constable, and three constables\u2014were suspended pending further inquiry. Yadav also directed a detailed investigation to determine responsibility and prevent future incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Collector Chouhan mandated a magisterial inquiry headed by Additional Collector C.B.\u202fPrasad. Congress president Mallikarjun\u202fKharge questioned the adequacy of crowd\u2011management measures and called for accountability at both government and administrative levels. Congress MLA Satish\u202fSikarwar demanded a criminal case against local officials responsible for crowd control.<\/p>\n<p>Union Minister Jyotiraditya\u202fScindia, a native of the Gwalior region, criticised the local administration after reporters highlighted repair work on hospital premises and the laying of a green carpet ahead of his visit to meet bereaved families. Scindia remarked, \u201cI belong to Gwalior; Gwalior is mine. Why would there be a green carpet for me? What is this, what kind of tamasha is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both the state and central governments announced ex\u2011gratia assistance. Chief Minister Yadav declared a payment of \u20b94\u202flakh to the families of each deceased, \u20b92\u202flakh to each critically injured person, and \u20b950,000 to other injured individuals. Prime Minister Modi, through the Prime Minister\u2019s National Relief Fund, offered \u20b92\u202flakh per deceased family member and \u20b950,000 per injured person.<\/p>\n<p>The Sheetla Mata temple, a prominent regional shrine, experiences heightened footfall during the Navratri festival. The incident has sparked renewed debate about crowd\u2011management protocols at large religious gatherings, especially in hilly or constrained locations.<\/p>\n<p>Investigations continue into the mechanical failure alleged by the driver, the possible influence of alcohol, and the procedural gaps that allowed a heavy vehicle to breach multiple security barriers.
