The mission, known as Griffin‑1, will be the first to place a high‑performance computing module and artificial‑intelligence (AI) experiments on the lunar surface.

Astrolab, a California‑based company, won a contract from NASA to develop a drivable rover for the agency’s Artemis program. Griffin‑1, part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, will launch the uncrewed FLIP rover under the broader Griffin Mission 1. Alongside FLIP, the launch will also deliver Astrobotic’s CubeRover, an optical navigation system called LandCam‑X, and a tiny archival device named Nanofiche GLPH.

Hardware Designed for the Moon’s Harsh Environment

The Spaceborne Computer‑4 is a compact, fanless module built to operate in the extreme conditions of the lunar south pole. It incorporates a low‑power 64‑bit central processing unit (CPU) paired with a graphics processing unit (GPU) and is mounted to FLIP’s cooling system. Power will be supplied by a combination of batteries and solar cells mounted on the rover. Solid‑state drives from KIOXIA will provide data storage.

According to Jaret Matthews, founder and chief executive officer of Astrolab, the computer’s chassis is made of heat‑conductive aluminum and is engineered to survive the lunar environment for a full year. “We have to design for a full year on the lunar surface,” Matthews told Space.com during an Oct. 14 media event. “That means surviving multiple lunar nights, upwards of 150 hours of complete darkness where we’re not receiving energy or warmth from the sun.”

Matthews added that the rover must operate semi‑autonomously for extended periods when astronauts are not present, traveling “hundreds of kilometers” over many months.

First‑Ever GPU and AI Experiments on the Moon

Spaceborne Computer‑4 will be the first supercomputer equipped with a GPU to operate on the Moon. The mission will also host an AI services container that HPE describes as a demonstration of “reliable deployment of scalable AI service applications on the moon.” While the precise AI applications have not been disclosed, the computer is expected to process visual data, support autonomous observations, and aid navigation, mapping, and terrain analysis.

One specific experiment involves a localization software originally developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for Mars missions. Matthews explained that the software uses a machine‑learning algorithm to compare a stored map with real‑time terrain images, allowing the rover to determine its position without GPS. “The challenge with the Moon and Mars is that there’s no GPS, so locating yourself and knowing where you are on the surface can be difficult,” he said.

Implications for Future Artemis and Commercial Lunar Activities

The Griffin‑1 flight is intended to prove that advanced computing and AI can function reliably on the Moon, a capability that could support future human habitation and commercial operations. NASA’s Artemis program aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface, and technologies that enable autonomous navigation, real‑time data processing, and AI‑driven decision‑making are considered essential for long‑duration stays.

Astrolab’s FLIP rover is designed to accommodate a variety of payloads, and the company views the mission as a showcase for how commercial mobility platforms can facilitate scientific research and technology development. “The Moon presents a challenging environment for advanced computing, and we’re pleased to provide HPE with an opportunity to demonstrate its technology on the lunar surface,” Matthews said in a statement.

While astronauts aboard the International Space Station already rely on computers for communications and experiments, the addition of AI on the Moon could expand capabilities in ways that are still being explored. The outcomes of Griffin‑1 will inform how future crewed missions might leverage on‑site processing for tasks such as habitat monitoring, resource scouting, and real‑time scientific analysis.

Astrobotic, the Pittsburgh‑based firm that built the Griffin lander, will deliver the rover as part of its CLPS contract with NASA. The partnership illustrates a growing ecosystem of private companies contributing hardware and software to the agency’s lunar exploration goals.

In summary, the upcoming launch of FLIP with HPE’s Spaceborne Computer‑4 marks a milestone for lunar technology: it will be the first deployment of a GPU‑enabled supercomputer and AI experiments on the Moon, testing durability, autonomy, and data‑processing capabilities that could shape the next phase of Artemis and commercial lunar activity.

Astrolab’s uncrewed FLIP rover will carry Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Spaceborne Computer‑4 to the lunar south pole later this year, marking the first high‑performance computing and AI experiments on the Moon.

[299
230,3149,3150,3147,3148
post-2837","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-ai","tag-artemis","tag-hpe","tag-moon-rover","tag-supercomputer","entry
["GET
