The debut is scheduled for the opening Twenty‑20 International in Christchurch, slated for Thursday, and will be integrated across the three‑format series that follows.

What Sonic technology brings to cricket

Sonic relies on sophisticated audio‑analysis to help third‑umpires determine whether the ball has made contact with the bat. Unlike traditional visual ball‑tracking, the system captures sound signatures generated at the moment of impact and processes them to confirm or refute a potential edge. Virtual Eye, the company that has supplied ICC‑accredited ball‑tracking services since 2008, will now provide the full suite of DRS tools – including ball‑tracking, pitch‑mapping and the new audio‑based edge detection – for the series.

The technology emerged from a dedicated research and development programme in New Zealand. According to Virtual Eye’s chief executive, the project involved years of refinement aimed at meeting the high accuracy and consistency standards required for elite international sport. The company views the approval as a milestone that showcases Kiwi innovation on a global stage.

Testing, validation and stakeholder endorsement

Before being cleared for live use, Sonic underwent an extensive programme of testing, validation and independent assessment. The process was conducted in close consultation with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and received support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). New Zealand Cricket (NZC) highlighted the collaborative nature of the effort, noting that the thorough review was essential to preserve the integrity of on‑field decision‑making.

Glenn Critchley, NZC’s chief marketing and commercial officer, emphasized that the technology’s approval reflected a rigorous and joint evaluation involving all relevant parties. He praised the comprehensive testing regime and expressed satisfaction with the outcome, while also acknowledging the contributions of the ICC, BCCI, Sky and Virtual Eye throughout the process.

Sky’s head of sport content added that the introduction of Sonic aligns with the broadcaster’s commitment to delivering high‑quality coverage and supporting innovations that improve the spectator experience. He indicated that the system’s performance will be closely watched during what is expected to be a vibrant summer of cricket in New Zealand.

Impact on the India‑New Zealand series

The series will feature five Twenty‑20 Internationals, followed by five One‑Day Internationals scheduled between 4 and 15 November, and conclude with two Test matches from 19 November to 1 December. Sonic’s inclusion means that every review of a potential edge in these matches will benefit from the additional audio‑based evidence, potentially reducing the number of inconclusive decisions and enhancing the overall fairness of the contest.

While the current approval applies specifically to the India tour, future deployment of Sonic will depend on ongoing ICC accreditation and any further assessments that may be required. Should the technology prove successful, it could become a permanent component of the DRS toolkit for other international series.

Stakeholders anticipate that the combination of visual ball‑tracking and audio edge detection will provide a more holistic view of each play, offering both players and fans a clearer understanding of critical moments. The move also underscores New Zealand’s growing role in cricket technology development, positioning the nation as a source of innovative solutions for the sport’s governing bodies.

As the first match approaches, attention will turn to how effectively Sonic integrates with existing review protocols and whether it delivers the promised improvements in decision accuracy. The cricketing community will be watching closely, aware that the outcome could influence the adoption of similar technologies in future international fixtures.

New Zealand’s Virtual Eye will introduce its Sonic audio‑analysis system as part of the Decision Review System for the first time during India’s tour of New Zealand.

[299
3193,3196,3197,3195,3194
post-2865","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-drs","tag-india-cricket-tour","tag-new-zealand-cricket","tag-sonic-technology","tag-virtual-eye","entry
["GET
