Independent estimates place the number of deletions at roughly 130 million, a figure that would represent the largest numerical disenfranchisement in modern history. Critics argue the exercise has disproportionately affected marginalized communities and may be driven by partisan motives.

Scale of the purge and official rationale

The voter database, once said to contain 980 million names, was trimmed by an estimated 130 million according to elections specialist Yogendra Yadav, a frequent critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has cited Yadav’s estimate in defending the revision, asserting that the removed names belonged to individuals who had died, had duplicate entries, had moved residences or were otherwise absent from the electorate.

Chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who heads the body tasked with overseeing the cleanup, has been accused by opposition figures of partisan alignment with the ruling party. Nonetheless, the commission maintains that the process is independent and that officers are working to reinstate those who have been wrongly deleted.

Personal stories illustrate impact on the ground

In a makeshift settlement built beneath a flyover in New Delhi, resident Kanchan described how about 500 adults in her community were struck off the electoral list. Kanchan, a 27‑year‑old teacher who raises a six‑year‑old son after her husband’s death in a road accident, learned of the deletions through a party representative who is permitted to examine the rolls.

“It’s important, because it shows we are citizens,” she told NPR while seated on a plastic chair as traffic passed overhead. Kanchan said she was asked to sign a form confirming relocation, even though an election official had visited her home. She fears that being removed from the rolls could jeopardize her modest government stipend of about $25 a month and the free food rations she receives, especially after the government announced that assistance programs could be curtailed for those not on the voter list.

Activists in the area reported that many deletions were based on documentation that voters had never been required to provide, such as proof that parents or grandparents had voted more than twenty years ago. Others were asked to reconcile discrepancies between the spelling of their names on the roll and on enumeration forms that were distributed unevenly.

Nasir Malik, a community activist in the Mustafabad quarter, expressed confusion after receiving a notice about his removal. “If this was a problem, how did I vote in elections before this?” he asked.

Legal challenges have also emerged. Lawyer Kaustubh Chaturvedi, who has filed multiple petitions against the revision, called the process “the largest disenfranchisement exercise in human history,” arguing that the burden of proof has been shifted onto citizens to demonstrate their identity.

Wider concerns and political context

Former chief election commissioner SY Quraishi, who served from 2010 to 2012, warned that the government appeared to be “choosing the voters” rather than voters choosing the government. He echoed a broader belief among critics that the BJP is engineering the rolls to suppress communities opposed to its agenda.

Historian Carole Anderson noted that, while the sheer number of deletions eclipses earlier U.S. voter‑suppression efforts such as Jim Crow laws, the latter involved a higher percentage of the electorate being disenfranchised.

In a video posted on the BJP’s YouTube channel in early October, the party reiterated that the approximately 130 million removed names represented individuals who were dead, duplicated, had moved, or were otherwise absent.

Another high‑profile voice, interior minister Amit Shah, initially framed the revision as a tool to detect “infiltrators” and said it would help deport illegal migrants. He later described opponents of the rollout as “protecting infiltrators,” a phrase often interpreted as a dog‑whistle aimed at Muslim communities.

One such community member, Malika, lives in Mustafabad and fears being labeled an illegal migrant after her name was deleted. Born without a birth certificate, she never attended school and lost her parents early. After her husband was killed in communal violence six years ago—an incident that left more than 40 people dead, mostly Muslims—she moved two hours away to find affordable rent. Because no election officer visited her new residence to update her details, she remains off the roll despite attempts to seek assistance, losing a day’s wages each time she visits the local office.

Malika, who works as a cleaner earning about $80 a month to support three children, said the only visible proof of her citizenship is the orange, white and green plastic bangles she wears, reflecting the colors of the Indian flag.

Official response and next steps

Following public outcry in September, the election commission reaffirmed its commitment to “complete integrity” and announced that officers would help those removed to be reinstated. Sunil Kumar, a senior election official in the Chandi Chowk constituency, told NPR that his department was actively working to restore the names of Kanchan’s community.

Despite these assurances, many affected individuals say the assistance is arriving too late. The combination of bureaucratic hurdles, new documentation demands, and the fear of losing essential services has left thousands in a state of uncertainty.

The voter‑roll revision remains a flashpoint in India’s broader political landscape, highlighting tensions between the ruling party’s claims of administrative cleanup and widespread allegations of targeted disenfranchisement. As the country approaches future elections, the balance between maintaining accurate electoral lists and safeguarding universal suffrage will continue to be closely watched.

An estimated 130 million Indian voters were deleted from the electoral list during a revision that began in June, prompting accusations of political targeting and fears of lost benefits.

[299
405,3204,1840,216,2297
post-2873","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-bjp","tag-disenfranchisement","tag-election-commission","tag-india","tag-voter-rolls","entry
["GET
