The traders’ body warned that the demonstration could disrupt commercial activity worth an estimated Rs 10,000 crore during the city’s peak Diwali shopping season.

Potential impact on festival‑time commerce

In a letter addressed to Gandhi, CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal highlighted that the rally’s timing coincides with a period of heightened consumer footfall. He noted that Dhanteras falls on Friday, November 6, while Diwali is on November 8 and Bhai Dooj on November 10. According to the letter, shoppers in Delhi begin purchasing for these festivals a week in advance, driving demand across a wide range of sectors.

Goyal cited CTI’s own calculations that Dhanteras‑related business in Delhi alone amounts to roughly Rs 25,000 crore. The figure encompasses sales of gold and silver, kitchen utensils, electronics, textiles, dry fruits, sweets, automobiles, vehicles, property and assorted gift items. He described this trade as “the backbone of Delhi’s economy.”

The chamber argued that markets typically see a surge in activity about a week before the festivals, making the planned rally a “matter of concern” for traders who rely on uninterrupted access to wholesale and retail hubs.

Recent losses attributed to previous disruptions

Goyal also pointed to losses already incurred by Delhi merchants in October. CTI estimates that traders have suffered approximately Rs 3,000 crore in damages due to a series of rallies, marches and road closures that affected Connaught Place, India Gate and other central‑city locations.

He explained that the movement of goods into wholesale markets was halted, while retail customers were unable to reach the shops. The cumulative effect, according to the chamber, has already placed a heavy financial strain on businesses that are still preparing for the upcoming festival rush.

Geographic scope of the disruption

The CTI letter listed around 20 wholesale and retail markets situated within a five‑kilometre radius of Ramlila Maidan. These include historic trading zones such as Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Bhagirath Palace, Khari Baoli, Kashmere Gate, Nai Sarak, Mori Gate, Kinari Bazar, Dariba, Daryaganj, Ajmeri Gate, Jama Masjid, Karol Bagh and Azad Market.

Goyal warned that these markets supply goods across the country. He cautioned that traffic diversions, metro station closures and barricading associated with the rally could bring commercial activity in these areas to a “complete standstill.”

Balancing protest rights with economic concerns

While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful protest and democratic expression, CTI appealed to political parties to avoid staging large gatherings in key commercial zones until the festival period concludes. The chamber’s appeal reflects a broader tension between political mobilisation and the economic imperatives of a city that depends heavily on retail and wholesale trade during the Diwali season.

The opposition rally, organised by the INDIA bloc, is intended to intensify pressure on the government over what the bloc describes as “vote chori” – alleged electoral fraud – and to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar following controversies surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

On October 12, activists, opposition leaders and civil‑society members staged a “March for Democracy” that culminated in a petition before the Supreme Court, challenging the SIR process. Rahul Gandhi subsequently hosted INDIA bloc leaders for tea at his residence on October 13, after which the coalition reaffirmed its commitment to continue the “vote chori” campaign.

CTI’s request comes amid a broader public debate about the appropriate balance between political expression and economic stability. The chamber’s letter does not demand the cancellation of the rally, but rather a postponement until after the Diwali shopping window closes, thereby protecting the estimated Rs 10,000 crore of commercial activity that could otherwise be jeopardised.

Stakeholders in Delhi’s wholesale and retail sectors are watching the situation closely, as any decision on the rally’s timing will have direct implications for merchants, consumers and the city’s overall economic health during one of the most lucrative periods of the year.

The Chamber of Trade and Industry warned that Rahul Gandhi’s planned rally on Nov. 1 could jeopardise up to Rs 10,000 crore of business during Delhi’s peak Diwali shopping period.

[299
3225,3224,3226,457,3227
post-2893","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-chamber-of-trade-and-industry","tag-delhi-rally","tag-diwali-shopping","tag-rahul-gandhi","tag-wholesale-markets","entry
["GET
