The escape was carried out after the inmates assaulted prison staff, prompting a large‑scale police operation that has so far recaptured thirteen of the escapees.

How the Escape Unfolded

Preliminary investigations indicate that all seventeen detainees were confined in a single cell in the second block of the sub‑jail. At about 10:30 p.m., a few of the inmates allegedly called the warder on duty, reporting that one of their fellow prisoners was experiencing a seizure. Responding to the call, the warder opened the cell door and entered. Once inside, the inmates overpowered the staff member, assaulted him, and used the opportunity to flee the facility.

Surveillance footage later confirmed that the escapees used a pathway normally reserved for prisoner movement, attacked several personnel at the main gate, and vanished under the cover of darkness.

Police Mobilisation and Early Recaptures

Following the incident, district police issued an alert and positioned a large contingent of officers at nearby check‑posts. Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Vijayendra Bidari rushed to the scene, convening an inquiry with Theni Superintendent of Police Praveen Gowtham and other senior officials.

Within a few hours of the breakout, the police reported the capture of four escapees. IGP Bidari named Praveen Kumar as the first recaptured inmate, followed by three others: Silambarasan of Theni district, and Raja Sikandar and Rajkumar of Madurai district. These early arrests brought the total number of prisoners secured to four.

By 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, special police teams had apprehended a further nine individuals, raising the total to thirteen. The names of the four rearrested prisoners were reiterated as Praveen Kumar, Silambarasan, Raja Sikandar, and Rajkumar.

Composition of the Escapees

The seventeen fugitives hailed from a range of districts across Tamil Nadu, including Chengalpattu, Salem, Kanniyakumari, Sivaganga, Madurai and Theni. They were being held on various criminal charges, such as possession of ganja, attempted murder and theft. The full list of escaped inmates, as released by authorities, includes: Lingam, Raja Sinkandar, Karuppasamy, Silambarasan, Thirupathi, Maenchi Sundram, Sabari, Pon Muthu, Nijanth, Karthik Raja, Mugilan, Selva, Tharun, Rajkumar, Praveen, Muthu Ilango and Rajuveen.

Special Teams, Drones and Inter‑State Searches

In response to the breakout, the police formed seventeen special teams tasked with combing operations across Tamil Nadu and the neighboring state of Kerala. Teams have shared photographs of the escapees with officers stationed throughout the region, facilitating coordinated searches.

Searches have focused on forested areas along the Western Ghats and the Idukki district of Kerala, where officials believe some of the fugitives may have sought refuge. The police have also deployed high‑definition drones to aid in locating the remaining prisoners.

Senior police officials have urged the public to assist the operation by calling 9498101570 or 9176104100 with any information about the escapees.

Injuries and Ongoing Investigation

The assault on prison staff resulted in injuries to at least three officers. The warder who was attacked, identified as Thangapandi, a Grade II constable, was taken to Theni Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Two additional staff members were also reported to be receiving medical care.

Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal stated that a thorough inquiry will be launched once all remaining prisoners are secured. He emphasized that the investigation will examine the circumstances that allowed the inmates to coordinate the escape and the role of jail personnel.

A discreet internal probe into the conduct of jail staff revealed that the seventeen escapees were all detained in the second block of the facility. The probe also confirmed that the inmates exploited a routine pathway meant for prisoner movement to reach the main gate before fleeing.

Prison Authority Directives

In the wake of the incident, prison authorities have issued directives for heightened vigilance across all correctional facilities in the state. Staff have been instructed to exercise extra caution when escorting prisoners for court appearances and to remain alert for any irregularities.

The coordinated escape from Thekkampatti sub‑jail underscores ongoing security challenges within the Tamil Nadu prison system and highlights the extensive resources mobilised by law‑enforcement agencies to recapture escaped detainees.

Seventeen remand inmates fled Thekkampatti sub‑jail in Theni district on Oct. 26; police have recaptured 13 and continue a multi‑state hunt.

[299
1964,3354,3356,562,3355
post-2993","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-law-enforcement","tag-prison-escape","tag-special-teams","tag-tamil-nadu","tag-theni-district","entry
["GET
