The surge followed a $3.2 billion offering that set two Indian records – the largest amount raised in a single IPO and the most heavily subscribed offering in the country’s history.

IPO details and unprecedented investor demand

The public offering ran on October 21‑22 and attracted more than $77 billion in investor bids, according to exchange data. Bids amounted to 22.19 times the number of shares on sale, and more than 13.8 million individual applicants participated, making it the most subscribed equity issue ever recorded in India. The issue comprised entirely of newly issued shares; existing shareholders such as Meta, Google, General Atlantic, Silver Lake and Vista Equity Partners did not sell any holdings.

Shares opened at ₹1,358 each – roughly $14 – a rise of about 21 percent from the IPO price of ₹1,119 (approximately $12). The pricing placed Jio Platforms at a market valuation of roughly ₹12.5 trillion, or about $131.9 billion, positioning it as the country’s second‑most valuable listed company after its parent, Reliance Industries, which is valued at about ₹16 trillion ($168.6 billion). When Meta and Google first invested in 2020, the company’s valuation was capped at around ₹4.91 trillion ($65 billion).

Jio’s rapid rise to market leadership

Jio entered the Indian telecommunications sector in 2016, a market that was then crowded with established players such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and the state‑run BSNL. By offering free data and low‑cost services, Jio quickly attracted a massive subscriber base, overtaking its rivals to become the nation’s largest telecom operator. At the listing ceremony, Akash Ambani, Jio Platforms’ managing director and the eldest son of Mukesh Ambani, said the company’s platforms now serve more than 540 million customers.

While pricing has largely converged with that of competing operators, Jio has broadened its business beyond mobile connectivity. The firm now provides broadband internet, cloud services and artificial‑intelligence solutions, reflecting a strategic shift toward a diversified digital ecosystem.

Financial performance and use of IPO proceeds

For the fiscal year ending March 2026, Jio reported a profit of ₹300.5 billion (about $3.2 billion) on revenue of ₹1.47 trillion (approximately $15.5 billion). Both profit and revenue were up roughly 15 percent compared with the previous year. In the most recent June quarter, revenue grew nearly 12 percent while profit increased by 9 percent, indicating continued momentum.

The proceeds from the IPO are earmarked primarily for debt reduction and general corporate purposes. Up to ₹275 billion (around $2.9 billion) is slated to repay debt held by the telecom subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm, while the balance will support broader corporate initiatives. As of June 30, Jio’s total borrowings stood at ₹613.7 billion (about $6.5 billion).

Leadership outlook and global ambitions

Akash Ambani, who has assumed a larger role as his father transitions leadership to the next generation, used the listing platform to articulate a long‑term vision for the company. He expressed a desire for Jio Platforms to become a globally recognised technology firm, stating, “My dream is that one day, when the world counts its great technology companies, one of them will be from India, and that company will be called Jio Platforms Limited.”

The ambition aligns with the company’s recent expansion into high‑growth areas such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence, and with the backing of major global investors. During the COVID‑19 pandemic in 2020, Jio attracted significant foreign capital, with Meta (then Facebook) investing $5.7 billion and Google contributing $4.5 billion. These strategic investors have remained committed, retaining their stakes through the IPO.

Analysts note that the strong debut and the scale of the offering underscore investor confidence in Jio’s growth trajectory and its capacity to leverage its massive user base for diversified digital services. The company’s ability to convert a large subscriber pool into revenue across multiple platforms will be a key factor in achieving the global technology status its leadership aspires to.

Overall, the market debut marks a pivotal moment for Jio Platforms, combining a record‑setting public offering with a robust financial foundation and a clear strategic roadmap aimed at cementing its position not only as India’s leading telecom provider but also as a contender on the world stage of technology companies.

Jio Platforms surged 21% on its market debut, raising $3.2 billion in India’s largest and most subscribed IPO, which attracted more than $77 billion in bids.

[299
1991,1368,3049,2812,1413
post-2995","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-indian-market","tag-ipo","tag-jio-platforms","tag-mukesh-ambani","tag-telecom","entry
["GET
