After Israel-Iran Conflict, Ukraine Asks US for Help against Russia

The world is witnessing a major upheaval, with many nations engaged in a war-like situation with each other and causing heavy destruction all over. From India-Pakistan’s conflict which ended a few weeks ago, to the ongoing disturbance in the Middle Eastern region due to Israel and Iran fighting against each other. Another pair that is facing a mass damage to property and loss of lives is the Eurasian belt of Ukraine and Russia.

In the conflict that’s been incessant since a long time now, Ukraine has finally reached out to the United States and sought Donald Trump’s assistance in fighting against Russia. The latest developments involve Russia firing 537 aerial weapons on Ukraine in its “most massive airstrike” since the February 2022 invasion. The assault included 477 drones and decoys, along with 60 missiles.

According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia launched its largest aerial assault on Ukraine overnight on June 29, involving hundreds of drones, cruise and ballistic missiles. The Air Force also confirmed that in an unfortunate incident an F-16 fighter pilot had died while trying to repel the attack. The jet was reportedly flown away from a populated area before crashing, leaving the pilot no time to eject.

The heavy blow strike has damaged homes and infrastructure across the country, injuring at least 12 people, according to the local officials cited by Bloomberg. In Kyiv, families took shelter in metro stations as machine-gun firing and explosions were heard across the capital. Similar attacks were also reported in Lviv, a region that typically sees fewer strikes.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has renewed his call for greater military support from Washington DC and Western allies, urging immediate reinforcement of Ukraine’s air defences in the face of intensifying Russian attacks. As per the latest count, Ukraine has now lost three US-made F-16 jets since their deployment last year, though the total size of the fleet remains undisclosed. The latest assault comes shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow is open to a new round of peace talks in Istanbul.

However, the previous negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian officials in the Turkish city were brief and failed to yield any progress.

Ukrainian forces reported destroying 211 drones and 38 missiles. The carefully planned attacks targeted multiple regions, leading to power outages due to the attacks. As a result, air defences in Poland and allied countries were activated to secure Polish airspace amid the cross-border threat. In a retaliatory threat, when Ukraine also fired its drones, the Russian defence force shot down quite a few of them.

With the manner in which intense firing is being held from both sides of the border, things could certainly become worse if no amicable solution is reached on, putting the lives of thousands of innocent civilians in grave danger, having lost many of them already.
