Donald Trump Issues Warning on Additional Tariff for These Countries

In the wake of the ongoing discussions between the United States and several countries, to finalize the trade tariff deals going forward, the US President has issued a rather strong statement on July 6, warning of imposing an additional tariff on countries that are aligning with ‘Anti-American BRICS policies.’

His statement comes after the BRICS 2025 Summit condemned the US and Israel strikes on Iran last month. Trump has assertively remarked of an additional tariff for countries aligning themselves with any BRICS policies which are ‘anti-American’ in nature. As per the latest announcement from the US leader, an additional tariff of 10 percent will be charged on such countries, over and above the already pre-disposed amount.

At the BRICS Summit 2025 being held currently in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 10 member states – Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russian Federation, South Africa, United Arab Emirates – condemned the American-Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, referring to the attacks as illegal and uncalled for. BRICS primarily stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – the five permanent members of the organization.

Furthermore, at the Brazil summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the double standard towards terror when it comes to attacks in the Global South. In a joint declaration issued by the participating members, all the countries slammed the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir held recently as the BRICS countries called to combat the cross-border movement of terrorists, terror financing and safe havens.

In continuation, PM Modi while attending this international meeting also pointed out on the double standards shown towards the nations of global south, often the victims in most cases. The joint declaration also criticized the ‘indiscriminate rising of tariffs’, without explicitly naming the United States, and added that such measures often threaten to undermine global trade and disrupt global supply chains.

BRICS also fortified its stance against the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip as it expressed the Global South’s sentiment against unilateral military actions. As the deadline for Donald Trump’s tariff pause comes to an end soon, the US president has stated that he has tariff letters for the identified 12 countries were signed and ready to be dispatched. Despite media reports calling out Trump’s alleged bluff on this matter, the Republican leader vehemently stated that the letters will be issued by July 7, Monday to the respective nations.

This tariff revision was originally announced on April 2, with a revision and hike on tariff rates for all of UStrading partners. However, amidst global backlash and collapse of trade deals, the US president had announced a 90-day pause, which was then extended until July 9, 2025.
