Donald Trump Hints at VP JD Vance to be his likely Successor in 2028

The U.S. President Donald Trump has addressed the press on August 5 and clearly suggested that the incumbent Vice President, JD Vance is “most likely” his heir apparent to serve as the Republican nominee in 2028, the furthest he has gone in backing Vance as a future presidential candidate, as the most reliable to lead his ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) movement, but cautioned that it was too early to make that call.

Well, I think most likely,” Trump told reporters when asked whether Vance was the heir apparent to the movement he has inspired. “In all fairness, he’s the vice president.” Trump also proposed that Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio join forces for a future Republican ticket.

Trump made the remarks in response to a question about US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statement that Vance “would be a great nominee if he decides he wants to do that.” I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form.” Donald Trump further opined in his media address.

Donald Trump’s remarks came hours after he said that he would “probably not” seek a third term. While the 2028 race is still years away, Trump holds considerable influence with the Republican base and any sign that he is backing a candidate carries significant implications, as one would expect. Given that Vance has been a Trump loyalist since his position of power came into effect, the public display of support is naturally befitting, considering the havoc his administration has created amidst the trade tariff row.

POTUS Donald Trump has declined in the past to offer any endorsement for a 2028 successor. He said in February that Vance was “very capable” but that it was too early to name him as the leading candidate. However, this change of stance months after his diplomatic response indicates that JD Vance’s position has gained significant momentum in Trump’s circle of preference.

Vance, a 40-year-old onetime Marine, has carved out a sizable role in the Trump administration, serving as a key diplomat and top surrogate selling Trump’s domestic policy at home and foreign policy abroad. He is currently serving office as the first time VP in the Republican government, and is married to Usha Vance, an Indian origin professional.

On the other hand, Marco Rubio, a former Florida senator, has emerged as a significant figure in an administration that has spent considerable time tackling thorny foreign policy dilemmas. He is the first person since Henry Kissinger to serve as both secretary of state and national security adviser.

Rumours of a third Trump presidency were fueled in April 2025 after his team started selling hats printed with the words “Trump 2028.” However, the American Constitution’s 22nd Amendment prohibits a person from becoming the President of the United States more than twice.
