Apple’s New Siri AI Praised for Concise Responses

Apple’s forthcoming Siri AI is demonstrating a notably concise conversational style, a characteristic that has been highlighted as a key differentiator from other artificial intelligence assistants. Early impressions suggest this new iteration of Siri prioritizes brevity in its interactions.

A Curt Approach to AI Conversation

While many AI chatbots adopt a more cheerful and expansive tone, aiming to foster a friendly user experience, this can sometimes lead to overly lengthy responses or persistent follow-up questions. In contrast, the new Siri AI appears designed to provide direct answers without unnecessary elaboration.

When presented with the simple prompt, “What’s going on?”, the new Siri AI responded, “I can search the web for news and other topics once you enable the necessary settings on your device.” This is a departure from competitors like Google’s Gemini, which offered, “Not much on my end—just hanging out in the digital ether, ready to help you out! How are things going with you? What’s on your mind today?” OpenAI’s ChatGPT provided, “I’m here. I don’t have enough context from ‘what’s going on?’ to know what you mean. Do you mean what’s happening in this chat, the news, your files/calendar/email, or something else?”

Direct Answers to Inquiries

In a test of weather inquiries for Portland, Siri AI stated, “The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch. Expect partly cloudy skies today,” accompanied by a temperature graphic. This was more direct than Gemini’s detailed forecast or ChatGPT’s summary that also included a graphic.

When asked more personal questions, such as “Can you be my friend?” or “Do you love me?”, Siri AI’s responses remained terse. To “Can you be my friend?” it replied, “I’ll be your friend, in fair weather and foul.” Responding to “Do you love me?” it stated, “I think you’re pretty great.” These responses contrast sharply with the more effusive answers from Gemini and ChatGPT, which explored the nature of AI companionship and affection.

A Tool-Oriented Design

The observed personality of Siri AI has been described as “ice cold” in comparison to the more enthusiastic Gemini and the cautiously helpful ChatGPT. This curtness, however, is seen as an advantage for users seeking efficiency and direct information delivery.

It appears Apple’s intention is to position Siri AI as a functional tool rather than a companion, a perspective that aligns with a broader view of how AI chatbots should be utilized. The new Siri AI is anticipated to be broadly available with the public release of iOS 17 this fall, though its tone may evolve before the official launch.
